RIP Tomita

Didn't see this in regular news; happened a couple of days ago and seems to only be covered by the music press so far.

Too busy at work to check for other obits, but doubtless this one from Sonic State is on the sparse side.

I was always fascinated by his work, more so than by the others in that recent video we saw. Still have a bunch of records.

It wasn't widely reported, but it was here (and in SOS):

Oh my, I listened to him a lot in college and turned my daughter onto him about ten years ago. RIP.

Time to find my copy of "Snowflakes..." and get reacquainted with an old friend.

Tomita was one of my early inspirations as I was moving from acoustic instruments performance to synth and MIDI. I didn't like everything he did, but I always had to respect the unique approach he took to orchestration, and when I liked it, I liked it a LOT. The first piece to grab my attention from the Snowflakes album was Debussy's Arabesque No. 1. When I would try out new digital synths, I was always looking for ways to make them do what Tomita did in that piece.

Brilliant man, and I'm sad to see him go.

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Even though it had moments of "unusual" humor, I practically wore out his LP version of Gustav Holst's "The Planets".

My brother reminded me that he did the soundtrack for "Escape from New York", which my brother lists as his favorite Tomita work.

Not surprised that he was an inspiration for a bunch of people here on this forum.
