Automation clips in DP perhaps?

Post by Robert Randolph »

I hear cries all the time for MIDI Clips, which is a fantastic feature I agree, but...

Now that we have automation lanes, it seems like automation clips would be an amazing feature to have.

It would also be extremely nice to have an 'automation library'. A selection of commonly used shapes that you could simply drop (as a clip) in to your automation lane then stretch as you need.

Anyone with me on this?

I see nothing wrong with such things. I've kept little libraries of things like vibrato, attacks, releases, and such, but I don't know if I've held on to any of them. It would not take long to recreate such a library.

But I do feel like bringing up the amazing real-time drawing features in DP, which can create an ideal vibrato curve in what is essentially one move, though you change fingers on the control keys a couple times. I'm talking about Shift, Control, Command, and Option. Using those in combinations as you drag out a line in a CC lane will produce nearly any kind of shape you want, in seconds. There's a post describing the techniques on page 2 of the DP Tips Sheet. I think it's titled something like Creating and Editing Automation Controllers.

Still, that perfect spinning vibrato or other controller curve is a rare thing to come upon, and when you do, it's great to save a copy of it. You can stretch it, shrink it, grow the amplitude, slice and dice it. Having it handy in a clipping is always a good thing. A library of such curves that pops up on command would be a valuable thing to have. In its absence, though, the drawing tools are still amazing.
