Metropolis at LACMA Friday Oct 16

I'll be improvising 2.5 hour score...

Hit me up for comps. I may have a few left. It's a 600+ seat theater.

Ahhh, too far for me. I love that movie — even with the Giorgio Moroder score as released in the 1980s.

What a cool movie for this gig, Magilla, and congratulations, mate.

I'm guessing you'll be able to venture further afield with your improvising than is usually the case. Some future-retro piano-techno, perhaps? You know what I mean.

Just watched the move for the first time in many years (at 3x speed) and with an additional 25 minutes of footage added. Man, what a challenge. I've played it before but have a lot more experience accompanying since then. Now I have to add lots more details and push the story pretty hard, without getting monotonous or boring, and maintain a concert piano style throughout.

Piece of cake... LOL Two run-throughs on piano: five hours of practice should be a good start, I suppose.

Oh rats, I had too busy a week at work to login until today, and now it has passed!

I couldn't have gone, but my friends down there might have been available and CERTAINLY would have been interested (they're the ones that came with me to see you accompany Hitchcock a couple of years ago).

I'll be in L.A. visiting them over Thanksgiving, so be sure to give advance notice if anything is on your concert schedule around that time!

Hope it went well. I've never seen the film; only excerpts. It must be an inspiring backdrop for improvising, half-composing, etc.

Or full composing, which last night was. There was one cornie there so he can report. I thought it went very well. I have a midnight gig the Sat. after T-day. Emo Phillips is co-hosting.

Cool; I'll keep that one on the calendar to look at the details later.

One of these days, I hope to go through the exercise of writing a soundtrack to a silent film. It's well-known as the main initiation rites -- at least, at many (or most) music conservatories -- for orchestral composition and arranging.

You were terrific, MLC! I don't know how you do it, just going and going off the top of your head for 2 1/2 hours. It was very cool and the "four notes" you mentioned were laced throughout. Bravo, dude!

And the film had been significantly restored since the last time I saw it - looked gorgeous!

Cheers,
BK

…string theory says that all subatomic particles of the universe are nothing but musical notes. A, B-flat, C-sharp, correspond to electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and what have you. Therefore, physics is nothing but the laws of harmony of these strings. Chemistry is nothing but the melodies we can play on these strings. The universe is a symphony of strings and the mind of God… it is cosmic music resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace.
