Post by emulatorloo »

I know James and others have been waiting for this. I am damn excited; I just discovered Slate Digital over the holidays through some great specials.

I'll have to check that out. Strange, he hasn't sent out an email about it yet. He usually tells us all that's going on.

Well, if it's so, then I'm going to be very happy!

I just checked. There IS an email. Here is an important part of that email:
  • Dear FG-X:
I'm pleased to announce that FG-X 1.4.0.4 is in your Slate Digital User Accounts.

This FG-X Update will provide 64bit support for AAX, AU, and VST. I want to be clear that this is NOT FG-X 2.0, but rather an updated version of your current FG-X plugin.

    Important Q&A:

    Q: Where is FG-X 2.0 and what is the difference between FG-X 2.0 and today's 1.4.0.4 release?

A: FG-X 2.0 is going to be a brand new, completely reworked plugin with new algorithms, created from the ground up in our new framework. It is being developed right now, and will be a free update later this year. The FG-X 1.4.0.4 in your user account is the same algorithms as your current FG-X, but with added support for the 64bit DAW formats.
The email continues with more information. Basically, this is our old plugin with updated 64 bit support. They are doing this to buy more development time while trying not to disenfranchise users who have been waiting. It's a good move, and I thank Steven Slate for making this available. It also means they won't be rushing and tempted to push an unfinished product out the door.

He assures us that the new version is coming later this year, and I look forward to it, but I'm glad I can use my old one again. (I'm no longer using any 32 to 64 bit conversion wrappers)

I'm a registered user and I have no idea why I don't get these emails. Hmmm. Been so long since I was in my user area at Slate Digital I hope I can figure it out. :) Still... even it's not 2.0 it will be nice not to have to bridge it with 32 Lives. As for 2.0, I smell an upgrade fee, but hey.... Fabrice does so,e great work! :)

Oddly enough, I started DP this morning, FG-X was scanned and it now is in the plugins list. I did a restart yesterday to no avail. Oh well it's there now.

Are you having the same patches issue as corbo-billy? I haven't downloaded this yet. I may put it off if there are issues.

Just installed it here on my system. Seems to be working okay. I can see the presets just fine. Well that's good news... nice to not be using 32 Lives for it now. :)

FG-X is the final step of my mastering these days, and I have to go to BIAS Peak 7 to use it, so the 64-bit update is welcome (once I have time to decipher their very confusing email so I don't get into a pickle as with VCC2).

Now I can finally justify the time to learn how to use PreSonus StudioOne for mastering (the only reason I bought it). I've been having to use RX4 lately, which is a bummer since you can only apply one plug-in at a time (unless using VE Pro for the task), and not all of them support presets so it gets a bit dodgy if I revisit a piece and can't get 100% the precise settings as the previous time.

I think this means Slate is all 64-bit at this point.

Happily the email Shooshie quoted says 2.0 is gonna be FREEEEEEEEEE. :woohoo:

As to Fabrice, yeah these plug-ins have really changed the way my rig sounds in a very very positive way.

I wish they wouldn't make the upgrade free. Charge a small fee; anything to help pay for their work. Companies that do free upgrades have trouble in the long run. Eventually, the new-user base each year shrinks, and you've got to ask your old users to pay for something, if you want to keep developing it, so I encourage Slate to charge SOMETHING.

Or at least, don't do that very often!

Good point. Slate FG-X is such a gem and if there is a lot of work done to improve the algorithms or add new ones and make it more processor efficient (it is admittedly a processor hog), some sort of nominal upgrade fee seems eminently fair.
