I'd just freeze my whole system and stock up on thermal underwear... sporting MOTU and unicorn logos, of course.
Oh, and I s'pose I'd have to stock up on spare MOTU audio and MIDI interfaces. It'd be money well spent - and life-saving too.

DP9 will come out, there will the invariable complaints about "something" ANYthing they don't like about it.
Then everyone will love it after version 9.0....something...then it will be out for a year and a
half, and then people will start chiming in about it remaining relevant..
and let me add...sigh

Yep. That's basically how the cycle goes for as long as I can remember. I'm so glad I don't do customer service for a software developer. I'd lose my mind. Years ago there was actually a (now former) MOTU employee that stopped reading this forum years ago because some of the negativity would get to him. But it must be just like that old adage for entertainers: "Do your best and never read your reviews."

I do like Izotope's scheme of using either licensing files or iLok, user choice.MIDI Life Crisis wrote:Exactly. As long as you could authorize it but if their server went down there you could have a problem there.

My point in posting about the EM Editor's Choice award was that it was pretty recent. To me it would be ridiculous to worry that DP is slipping because it hasn't received an award since 2013, but you can't please everybody.

Re: Cubase won the NAMM 2015 TEC award.....
I don't believe in universally condemning the competition, but I reserve special adjectives for QBase and Innuendo.
Although it's true that the 100 hours that I lost trying to get MIDI to work (i.e. pass signal) in QBase were in vain due to an unacknowledged bug (i.e. the AI4 version that I had simply didn't work on Macs), it was maddening on its own that this so-called cross-platform app presents itself completely in Windows Audio terms and you have to set up faux AIO drivers or whatever they're called (I've long ago lost interest in even having an awareness of Windows audio needs; almost everyone I know who did Windows audio has long since migrated to the Mac or to Linux).
My impression of their products was not enhanced when the post-purchase version of eLicenser barely worked on Macs at all for well over a year.
Then came the supposedly cross-platform edition of WaveGoodbyeEditor, which I desperately wanted to like, as so many people I work with use(d) it on their Windoze machines. But it changes radically in each version, and like QBase it requires multiple workflows with different philosophies (i.e. different programming teams that didn't have a common vision), and multiple user manuals.
So I am really curious what it is about QBase that is award-worthy?

Agreed. They never seemed to quite get it cross platform. I spent forever trying to get "warp" working, which I thought I was getting with a paid upgrade. I called tech support, and later got a call back saying they hadn't actually implemented time and pitch stretching in the Mac version.mhschmieder wrote:Although it's true that the 100 hours that I lost trying to get MIDI to work (i.e. pass signal) in QBase were in vain due to an unacknowledged bug (i.e. the AI4 version that I had simply didn't work on Macs), it was maddening on its own that this so-called cross-platform app presents itself completely in Windows Audio terms
There was one revision in which someone had actually coded a Windows error dialog (in German) in the Mac version, perhaps as a joke, perhaps because the coder took his task too literally.
They seem to have closed the windows mac gap to some extent since, but it's still obviously a ported Windows app.

Many years ago, when I moved over to a Mac (the G4 at the time), I had contacted my Sweetwater rep and asked about getting Cubase for the Mac. Fortunately he warned me away from Cubase for exactly the reasons you bring up. He steered me to DP instead.mhschmieder wrote:it was maddening on its own that this so-called cross-platform app presents itself completely in Windows Audio terms and you have to set up faux AIO drivers or whatever they're called (I've long ago lost interest in even having an awareness of Windows audio needs; almost everyone I know who did Windows audio has long since migrated to the Mac or to Linux).

I can see why you would think it was a Windows ported app, but it's not. It was ported from Atari to Mac then two years later to Windows.bayswater wrote: Agreed. The tendency towards Windows happened in the late 90's early 2000's. Their sales of Mac versions is good enough to make them not think about dropping OSX though.

Re: Cubase won the NAMM 2015 TEC award.....
Cubase VST was Atari to Mac, then to Windows (at VST 5?), but I have to believe SX was developed on Windows. But they have continued to sell Mac versions, and the V7.5 version I trialled was fine.Michael Canavan wrote: I can see why you would think it was a Windows ported app, but it's not. Re: Cubase won the NAMM 2015 TEC award.....
Yeah SX came out around the time of OSX, so it had plenty of teething problems on OSX for sure. Especially since Steinberg weren't about to adopt non-cross platform standards like Core Audio and Audio Units. My guess is a lot of people left Cubase for DP, PT and Logic about that time.bayswater wrote: Cubase VST was Atari to Mac, then to Windows (at VST 5?), but I have to believe SX was developed on Windows.
