True, I expect that will be the norm for Apple apps going forward. It's not a trend that is going to play well with the old concept of finding a stable place to keep your rig. So we shall see how it all plays out for those who depend on Logic.mikehalloran wrote:Some (many?) will be unhappy that Logic 10.1 requires Mavericks or Yosemite.billf wrote:FYI, Apple released a huge update to Logic today...

Avid releases free version of ProTools (to compete with GarageBand?)

I guess...but their insistence on only supporting their own plugin format isn't going to win them any converts from people with a collection of plugs.

I think you hit on exactly what their strategy is: In-app sales. From the PT Free web page:I guess...but their insistence on only supporting their own plugin format isn't going to win them any converts from people with a collection of plugs.
"Visit the in-app Marketplace and discover a world of super affordable plug-ins that make creating and enhancing sounds quick and easy—with prices starting at about a cup of (frozen) coffee."
Like a video game! Very tricksy those Avid marketing guys. It was inevitable I guess.
Here's a direct link. http://apps.avid.com/ProToolsFirst
Limited to 16 tracks and 4 inputs. Could be useful in a number if ways. I've nearly bought PT Native a few times in order to interface with clients easily. Maybe now I won't have to.

I applaud the effort but, between Audacity and GarageBand, they're a bit late to the party.

…string theory says that all subatomic particles of the universe are nothing but musical notes. A, B-flat, C-sharp, correspond to electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and what have you. Therefore, physics is nothing but the laws of harmony of these strings. Chemistry is nothing but the melodies we can play on these strings. The universe is a symphony of strings and the mind of God… it is cosmic music resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace.

Re: NAMM 2015, DP9? speculations?
I hate to say this, not trying to make enemies with my DP brethren , and I remind you all, I am a Big fan of Dp, but Pro Tools Elastic pitch and Time smoke Dp’s and if not for PTs elastic products, I never would have been able to fix an Live Orchestra project I did last yr. So, YES, Dp needs to improve it’s elastic properties, asap..... please! It is a bit sad that FREE Pro tools has better elastic pitch and time than DP 8...9. Unless of course, DP 9 improves this aspect? One can hope!Tritonemusic wrote:Elastic Pitch and Elastic Time is reason enough for me to use the free version of PT.

If I read it correctly, you have to save free version projects in the Avid cloud?Tritonemusic wrote:Elastic Pitch and Elastic Time is reason enough for me to use the free version of PT.

Re: NAMM 2015, DP9? speculations?
Thanks for the heads-up on cloud storage before I wasted time downloading the free version to help out in more precise audio editing for my current project.
I refuse to have my data on the so-called "cloud" (what a horrible term; clouds are moving all the time and dissipating precipitation, so why would I trust my data to something so unstable?).
Not to mention, I usually am not allowed to share the data in any way or present it in a potentially insecure environment or location.

Re: NAMM 2015, DP9? speculations?
Check that out. I haven't tried it (and don't intend to -- PT interfered with a lot of things the last time I had it running) so it might be possible to stay off the cloud.mhschmieder wrote:Thanks for the heads-up on cloud storage before I wasted time downloading the free version to help out in more precise audio editing for my current project.
