Yaybahar

Post by Babz »

Yaybahar is an electric-free, totally acoustic instrument designed by Görkem Şen. The vibrations from the strings are transmitted via the coiled springs to the frame drums. These vibrations are turned into sound by the membranes which echo back and forth on the coiled springs. This results in an unique listening experience with a hypnotic surround sound.

What you hear in this performance is captured in realtime without any additional effects and with no post audio processing.

Trippy.

Kind of like an analogue Theremin played by Hendrix at a Sufi ceremony.
Or something.
Cheers,
BK

…string theory says that all subatomic particles of the universe are nothing but musical notes. A, B-flat, C-sharp, correspond to electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and what have you. Therefore, physics is nothing but the laws of harmony of these strings. Chemistry is nothing but the melodies we can play on these strings. The universe is a symphony of strings and the mind of God… it is cosmic music resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace.

It's like caviar. Nice in small doses but you can't turn it into a meal. Potatoes are way more useful but far less sexy. Still it's interesting for special effects, abstract religious services, and calling flying saucers in. I LOVE the studio and view. Must be nice. Thanks for the link Babz.

I'd bet money that Phillip Glass is already working on the Yaybahar Concerto.

I'm amazed at how it seems to produce distinct delay taps with feedback. I wonder what the mechanics of that are? Sound traveling back & forth transversely across the springs and only "repeating" when it comes back to the membrane after a round trip?
