Ah, I understand now. I haven't burned a CD for a long time... everything I do is for video, radio or games, so I deliver files via FTP transfer or by e-mail. I didn't even think of disc authoring features.

If DP sounds so good (as we all agree it does), and we have so many excellent sounding multiband compressors, linear EQs and more in our plug-in folders, why would one not just master stereo files in DP with those plugs?

That's what I do now, and I can't see a reason for another program for the task. I'm not being snide or snarky here, I'm genuinely asking what I'm missing.
For starters, DP can't create DDP files, burn a CD from them, or play back a DDP fileset.

DP can't insert ISRC codes into tracks, AFAIK.

The CD Layout window in DSP-Q is very convenient for CD assembly; DP doesn't have anything like it.

I still use DP for sonic adjustments when mastering because I'm accustomed to the workflow, then move to DSP-Q for assembling and exporting the master.
That pretty much sums it up for me too. I master stuff in DP because it's a very comfortable environment for me, and (not caring how many experts tell me not to), I like adjusting my mixes as I master. Even when I'm getting ready for outside mastering I will run my mixes through a mastering chain -- close to what I think the M.E. will use (emulated, of course), and adjust the mix accordingly, and then route through a dry bus or bypass the mastering chain for final output.

I will sometimes do some limiting in DSPQ4 because of FG-X being 32-bit, but I tend to use other limiters now.

So, anyway...

I love having all these tools, but careful not to drown in the endless sea of choices.

I can't get an authorization file. I get to the PIN registration window, and ask for the A.F., but I get no email reply. I have a note to customer service, but no replies. Am I missing something?

Many of us had that issue or something similar when we first purchased–the automatic processes during purchase have been known to glitch. He's very good about straightening it out.

He usually answers very quickly, and seems to do everything himself. Remember he's in Italy, so it might be a time zone thing.

Anyone have word on how the 64bit version is coming along?

Most plugin makers have fixed the issue with versions that no longer work in 32bit Carbon based apps like DSP-Q and DP 7.24. Izotope still has a couple (Trash 2 and Iris) but the rest have Carbon compatibility re-enabled.

I wonder if it's worth his effort if he's only getting $19 for updates.

Just what is the advantage of having an app like DSP-Q in a 64 bit version?

I just heard back from Stefano. He wrote:
I'm working hard on the next version 5. It is a totally rewritten application and, among the others, it is a 64 app with a 64 bits audio engine. It is scheduled for the public release on December.

DSP Quattro has improved my life considerably. I looked for years for something to replace Waveburner's CD mastering functions that I need every day. Writing DDP files has streamlined my workflow and eliminated some weekly overnight shipping I used to have to do. The easy way it handles regions, markers and tracks and the versatility to do just about anything I need to do has simplified my old workflow a LOT. CD's and DDP files created have been 100% reliable both duplicated and replicated, week in and week out. 64 bit not an issue here though.

Until the music industry embraces a 96K/24bit CD, I don't think there could possibly be any advantage to a 64 bit CD mastering station. But I'm thinking in terms of one who does his real mastering in DP, then puts it all in DSP-Q and burns a CD. I sometimes use minimal processing, or a brick wall limiter, but that's all well within the range of 32 bit memory addressing. CD mastering only barely budges the CPU meters. 32 bit addressing not a handicap.

If the Mac quits running 32 bit apps entirely, then I can see the obvious need. But I haven't even heard any overtones about that happening.
