I've seen conflicting information about resale of Logic Pro X in the USA (Europe is different).

Some people are selling theirs on eBay, at ridiculous prices that make me suspicious (e.g. $38, $30, etc.).

I do see one copy for $150 that seems legit as not having been "bought" yet but rather being an Apple App Store voucher?

"Full version of Logic Pro X as a code redeemable in the Apple App Store. I will send you the code within 24 hours of purchase."

Does this sound trustworthy?

I'd like to spend less than full price if I can, as the only thing I plan to use Logic for, is some MIDI editing features that DP doesn't yet have.

There seem to be a lot of pirated copies of Logic on ebay.

I've heard that it is easy to pirate. A couple of acquaintances offered to show me how to get it for free -- as if I didn't already know how. Those versions don't register with the App Store and cannot be updated.

I pay for my software, thank you.

Apple has on occasion allowed copies of dubious origin to be registered such as Apperture, iWork and iLife. They "hope the copies are legit". In these cases, the current versions are free to most users anyway as part of the Mavericks and Yosemite upgrades. This courtesy has not been extended to any of the pro apps such as Logic, Final Cut etc.

It could be. If you get a code redeemable through the App Store and it works, then it is a legit copy.

I would back up my purchase through a credit card. In case of a scam, you get your money back.

Thanks, Mike. I haven't bought through the App Store before (other than "buying" free software), so I wanted to make sure I wasn't about to be bamboozled by a slick talker.

Obviously, I have no intention of supporting piracy or resale, and am suspicious anyway of what it means to buy a voucher and not use it, unless it was a gift the guy didn't want?

FWIW, all of the sellers recent (from the past year) sales have been video games or older revs of the iPhone, and that sort of thing.

One item was a $100 Barnes & Noble gift card, sold for $90. So it's likely the Logic Pro X voucher was an unwanted gift.

I'll be extra-cautious before going forward, however. I'm not sure saving $50 is worth the risk to me, even if credit card purchases can protect the buyer.

The fact it hasn't sold yet (though there's a "Make an Offer" button) makes me think that others smell a rat.

Going the eBay route seem's too risky to save to a few bucks.

A huge advantage of the App store is that all purchased apps are always there. Imagine having to replace apps due to some catastrophic event such hard drive malfunction or loss of the computer.

If you buy something on ebay and it turns out to be fraudulent, you are quite well protected. It's not difficult to file a claim and the buyer almost always wins, especially in cases like these. If it's not worth the potential hassle of spending 30 seconds to file a claim, in order to save $50, then don't do it.

How to long to resolve the claim?
It took a couple of weeks to resolve my claim with a less-than-reputable seller of custom samples with a 98% approval rating.

I have purchased boxed software with a license from eBay in the past. No problem. But side-stepping the App store in this case still doesn't make much sense to me.

Thanks, wvandyck; my decision is now made to only buy direct through the app store. If it was a reseller (something that no longer exists for Apple software products) it would be different.

I've gone through five conflicts via eBay overall; two as buyer and three as seller. The Bay is NOT a seller-friendly site, let me tell you. But I gave up on the buyer case that I lost (I lost two of my three seller cases even though 100% in the right and dealing with buyers who were crooks). Not worth the time/effort once challenged. Only actual crooks seem to have the incentive. :-)

Yeah, I originally had hoped to buy from Sweetwater, to make up for forgetting their sponsorship of the site when I bought DP9 direct from MOTU. That's how I found out that Apple no longer uses resellers for their pro software. I think they made that change somewhere between one and a half, and two, years ago.

In a clean rematch, I'd predict Digital Performer 9 to win by TKO in the seventh.

DP still rules, but Logic was worth the price of entry to me for the new Alchemy 2.0 exclusive update and for some unique MIDI editing capabilities. Beyond that, I just see it as Garage Band Plus. :-)
