I would have mentioned it and chatted online with an MS product "specialist" on the release date, but they will not say what iOS it works on for Mac. Presumably all of them, but I'm hesitant. Besides, there are many ways to skin that cat...

Microsoft is touting it's new Office 365 for iPad yet doesn't say what iOS it supports. I just chatted online with tech support and they keep saying it supports Mac OS 10.6, which is NOT an iOS. The tech insisted that's all I need to know.

Bottom line: MS is NOT announcing what iOS their new iPad product (at $99/year) supports. Hence, no sale from me. I have the original iPad and no intention of upgrading any time soon, but it is annoying when the company "line" about a product just ignores valid questions about compatibility. All they really want is your money and if it doesn't work, then you should have known? I don't think so.

I won't be buying any MS products for a long time to come, but you'd think they'd be more open about such matters or at least a little more customer centric. Apparently not so much.

Jay Levine I have been using Pages Numbers and Keynote on my ipad and it seems to work fine for what I need. I also user Evernote as a note taking tool

Dominic Namnath Check out CloudOn app. It's virtual Word, excel, and Powerpoint. and it's FREE

Lisa Tatge All the apps were released today, but I can't locate them via search to check anything in the AppStore.

Love my Apple machines despite their issues, but the lack of these apps has been a thorn for years. I can't stand Pages, Numbers and Keynote, because I can't export to Word, Excel or PowerPoint, which makes iWork useless for all my real world applications. I have tried several third party apps without success, though not CloudOn.

If you're just reading files, the Office apps are supposed to be free. Gotta pay, though, if you want to edit.

I don't need to know the iOS version? Seriously?! Thought iTunes support was bad.

Dominic Namnath Not to be a troll, but iWork exports to all those aforementioned formats...

Michael Mortilla I love all my fellow geeks weighing in.

Lisa Tatge Dominic - Sorry to say, but mine does not. There are no options. They might have updated that and I didn't get it. I'll check....

Michael Mortilla Careful Dominic. Lisa is actually a rocket scientist.

Lisa Tatge On another note, finally found one of the free apps and gave it a try. Got PowerPoint. Great for reading mail. Nothings out of place or moved around, all the fonts are correct, and the format is basically the same as the desktop version. Debating on purchasing the editing version....

Dominic Namnath Well, iWork Share Export to whatever has been around since at least 2008, rockets or no rockets. In the iCloud version the options appear when you download too.

There has been some confusion about using the "mic input" of the headphone jack. This may have been a feature in iPad 1 & 2 (not sure), but it no longer exists in gen's 3 & 4.
A lot of the confusion about the headphone jack is that the mic or interface needs to have a trrs plug like an iPod earphone bud set to work. The standard trs plug may work with the iPad 1 as an input but I've never tried.

This works with all versions of the iPhone and iPad. It isn't very good for much else but voice but mine works on all my devices. I got mine cheap.

I'm pretty sure that those TRRS things DON'T work with later versions of the iPad.

Hence the confusion. Event that page says, "Is compatible with iPhone/iPod touch/iPad".

I can confirm that my iPad 4 does NOT have this capability.

The last version of Pages for the Mac works with the version of Pages supported by iOS 5. Unfortunately, the current version of Pages for the Mac and iOS 7 do not.

This wasn't so bad as long as I used the older Pages on my Mac and iPad 1. If I open the doc on my iPhone, however, it can't be read on my iPad 1 anymore. This is why I let my kids get Dad an Air for Christmas. The Air is a lot faster but it was Pages and Notes compatibility that made it for me.

Pages in iOS works in iCloud. In iOS 7, you can upload Word 2004 and 2011 docs directly to iCloud.

At some point during the transition, Pages stopped syncing with the Mac for most of us. It turned out that there was a preference file that, once deleted and rebuilt, allowed everything to sync again. I don't recall the file name but I could find it again if need be.

If the new version of Office does not work directly with iCloud and GoogleDocs, I have no interest in it.

The iRig iCast works with my iPhone 5S and iPad Air. I don't know what you are using. The sound quality isn't that good, however.

Likewise, I have no reason to disbelieve IK when they state that the iRig Pre is likewise compatible:

iRig PRE is compatible with iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch (5th, 4th and 3rd generation), iPad Air, iPad 4th generation, iPad 3rd generation, iPad 2, iPad, iPad mini 2nd generation and iPad mini. iOS 4.3 or later is required

Well, now this does get more confusing, because I tried a different TRRS config on my iPad4 with no success, and found numerous posts saying there wasn't any such connectivity on it.

I now officially return to my previous state of confusion. :|

FWIW, I have an older iRig by IK and it works great with both the Strobosoft tuner that both Shooshie and I mentioned, as well as TC's Polytune, which if you've never tried it on guitar, you really need to. I finally got around to trying it and it's quite impressive how it works!

One thing about the App Store and iPad apps. If it can't run on your iOS, you can't download it. I tried downloading the free readers to my iPad 1. I got "... Need a front facing camera" or "iOS 7 required" errors.

Ends it for me.

The first iPad was released only 4 years ago (almost to the day). On one hand, it feels like a short life-span before many apps and even iOS becomes incompatible. On the other hand, they have made very impressive improvements in speed and design- and so it evolves somewhat quickly.

It sounds like an iPad1 still proves useful. Perhaps for the technophile it becomes the iPad you take on the canoe trip and you leave your shiny new one at home.

I was going to sell my 1st gen iPad after the kids bought me an Air but didn't after considering exactly that. A lot of music apps still run on iOS 5. I wouldn't spend $200 on a used 1 when the II can be had for not much more.

There was a short gap between the II and III and Apple was still trying to clear the excess inventory last I checked. It might still be available from some resellers. There were issues getting the II to run iOS 7 but iOS 7.1 fixed that.

Going back to the TRRS issue, I've noticed that only mono mics or audio hookups can be done with TRRS. For stereo or anything else more complex, it needs to use the 30 pin or Lightning connector.

Some 30 pin devices work with the Apple Lightning Adapter; others do not. My Line6 Mobile Keys 49 does, btw.

For those looking at cases, "PU leather" abounds. You can even get "genuine PU leather" PU is polyurethane.

I really like this genuine leather case with Bluetooth keyboard for $36. Here's a link to the iPad II, III and IV version.

The iPad Air version that I have:
http://www.amazon.com/Ionic-Bluetooth-K ... +iPad+case

The iPad I has a larger form (same screen size) and I don't see cases for them except on eBay - usually with iPads in them already.

I was relieved to discover that one of my MIDI controllers that would not initially work directly connected to the CCK (camera connection kit) worked when connected via the externally powered hub. Power draw is the big issue there.
