DP Activations

Post by bayswater »

The info accompanying the DP 8 package says that while the licence is only for one computer, you can in fact activate it on two computers for the convenience of those who might use it on a desktop and laptop, albeit, not at the same time. I have DP on an iMac and a MBP.

OK so far. I tried to install DP on a test partition on my iMac's internal drive to make sure I can get everything working properly with 10.9 before doing the OS update on my main partition. Apparently this counts as a third computer. I can see the problem with activating DP on multiple disks on one computer, but what harm can there be to licence compliance by activating it on more than one partition on the same disk? (No, you can't just run it from another partition's Application Folder; it still asks you to activate)

Anyway, I think that would be a useful and legitimate relaxation of the license agreement.

The automated server on the other side can't know any of that, of course.

Normally, these types of licenses inactivate older installs and only let the current one run. You shouldn't see a problem unless trying to run two installations at once.

Any problems with your internet connection can muck this up, of course. Also, if you are authorizing off-line, there can be problems.

Otherwise, if you've got a good internet connection, you might see a slight delay with the start up screen while it checks the license but, otherwise, it should be seamless.

I have lost count how many times I have had to re-activate my license. Certainly every time I restore from backup. I sometimes do a lot of testing that requires a complete restore. As long as I type my name, email address and serial number exactly the way that MOTU server wants to see it, I am good.

No, not the way it's set up now. But installers can examine multiple drives, account, partition, and clients on a local network. A number of Apple installers and copy protection processes used to work that way.
