MOTU and NAMM

Post by mikehalloran »

First time I've been since my stroke in 2009 - less difficult to navigate in a wheel chair than I expected but it's no picnic in that regards. If I go again on Saturday, I'll rent a scooter.

Very little new this year. Pretty much sums up NAMM Winter 2014.

The most exciting product I've seen is the 828x of which only the "x" is new. I asked about latency compared to USB and FW, both offered on the otherwise identical 828mkIII. I was told there was no difference among the three protocols unless multiple 828s were hooked up. If the USB or FW bus is taxed, then the TB hookup would be faster. Otherwise, there is no benefit other than it just plugs in without adapters - one should not discount that advantage but still.

I sat through a Magic Dave demo of CueMixFX with the 828x / mkIII. I definitely need an upgrade from my mkIi. Big time. I had no idea what I was missing.

Later he went through some features of DP 8 using a restoration project he's been working on. I'll be buying the box set. If I go back this afternoon, I'll try to catch a few more demos.

Over at the Make Music booth, Tom Johnson was showing off a bunch of Finale tricks that many users don't know. Very informative and I tod him of some features in the Mac OS that make Smart Score scanning work properly with any scanner - even HP - which he didn't know. I need to update to Finale 2014. It's time.

I am here to work on a book and talk to many whom I'll be interviewing later. I'm having a great show in that regards. In addition, I am a dealer for a few lines and it's good to remind a few suppliers what I look like.

On that note, if you're at the show see someone who looks like me and wonder, I will have a wheel chair or scooter nearby. I won't this evening as I can navigate short distances with a cane. Till this evening...

Would be most grateful if someone could shoot some video at the MOTU booth. Would love to see Magic Dave's 828x/CueMix FX presentation! Always hard to find MOTU NAMM footage on YouTube...

The @motutech Twitter feed has some short video clips, but unfortunately they are all Vine clips, which are so short as to be almost useless.

So I take it this means no further news on Symphonic Instrument 2 or an updated version of MX4.

I'm not at the show but for me the news so far is the most exciting of any show in many years, for my own areas of personal interest. For instance, the new Moog paraphonic synthesizer, and Arturia's innovative new $99 step sequencer.

I get the impression that software vendors are finding less reason to be at NAMM and that software/hardware vendors are seeing less benefit in using the show for their software announcements. I think those now get pushed to MusikMesse.

Unfortunately I had to leave early yesterday (Friday) and couldn't attend
the MOTU-Mac dinner. Hope it was a blast for everyone who went, sorry I
had to miss it.

I'll be going back to NAMM tomorrow (Sunday). From Friday, my overall
impression of the show was that many many companies are in the middle of
product development cycles and so didn't have much new to display. The
fundamental change for NAMM over the past ten years is that it really isn't
a showcase for new products anymore - new products are now announced online
ahead of the show, often months before it. So everyone has a good idea of
what will be shown.

Gone are the days when people lined up for hours to see a closed-booth
demo of something like the Kurzweil K250 or the first ADAT. It's almost
impossible to come out with a truly "revolutionary, game-changing" product
anymore. Most everything is evolutionary these days. I saw a number of demos that were "fixes" of existing products or logical developments
which fall under the "it's about time" category.

Bottom line is that NAMM is still primarily for musical instrument retailers. Not the general public.

Anyone ask whether an 896x is coming soon?

Also, a little surprised they went for Thunderbolt. I thought that AVB or Dante were more likely, so it could be networked.

I'd like to see it again, frankly. I hope someone posts it to YouTube and posts a link. He covered a lot of ground. At the end, I was thinking that I need either a mkIII or an x and then learn CueMix FX.

You posted the same link twice Babz. Is there a 15 min Magic Dave video somewhere? …MOTU said on Facebook that they'll be posting videos on the NAMM demos soon.
