Did your upgrade involve switching from Nehalem to Westmere?

Just curious in light of the fact that Tom only offers speed upgrades - not Nehalem to Westmere, presumably due to the latter's cost.

Yes; I went to a W3680. Cost me a tad under $600.

The single CPU upgrade Tom offers does go to Westmere but, as you note, for cost reasons, he doesn't go there for the dual CPU models, choosing fast quad cores. But here is an example of a reasonably-priced used 2.93 hex Westmere CPU (you'd need two) you can drop in your MP (after flashing to 5,1):

Westmere is essentially a Nehalem die shrink with enhancements:
