UAD drops support for UAD-1

Post by Phil O »

Got an email from U-Audio this morning. If you're a UAD-1 owner you might want to check this out. They are dropping support for UAD-1.

From the email:
As of December 31, 2013, we will be shutting down the UAD-1 registration / authorization servers, card transfer functions, and support. We will also be discontinuing the sale of UAD-1 plug-ins in our online store.

They are offering an upgrade to a UAD-2/Apollo, but it's only in the form of plugin vouchers. I was hoping for a hardware discount but no such luck.

With my work, I never ended up using the UAD-1 often enough to justify an upgrade.

I've got my UAD-1 card in an old G4 and can pipe audio in and out if I ever need any of those tones.

I just want to make sure I have the last good software and authorization stuff if I ever need to reinstall anything.

Same here. My UAD-1 is in a G5 and can be accessed via ADAT when needed. I got it originally to expand the processing power of a G4. But a basic Mac now has so much more processing power, and the quality of native plugins has improved so much, the UAD is getting pretty dusty. If they ever moved on from emulation of ancient hardware it might be different.

Interesting that they drop support for the old product when their current hardware is 3 years behind the times.

FireWire may not be dead but it's barely breathing. A TB adapter card is a start and it's good that their PCIe cards work in expansion chassis but if they wish to be cutting edge, an announcement of built in TB (TB-2?) with USB 3 would be a really good idea - if not concurrent with the new Mac Pro, then by NAMM.

Agreed, Mike. I have a UAD-2 card in my big Mac, but I won't be upgrading my old UAD-1 unless U-Audio plays some serious catch up.

Maybe they've decided their focus on "vintage" audio needs to be matched by vintage computers.

Hmmm. I have a UAD-2 Duo now, but still have a UAD-1 in my old G5. I wonder of this has any impact on selling it? Probably just that only "included plugs" will work on it. I never expected to get much of anything for it. Never traded it or anything. Just bought my Duo outright.
