Clearly off topic? I don't know about that. The use of plugins is a big part of using DP or any other DAW. What about a question about a plugin that comes with DP, with no specific mention of DP? That's off topic? How about Stubsonics post on thunder sounds for proverb?
Of course posts about using DP's included plugins would be on-topic.

I was responding to Phil O's post, which I assume was a theoretical situation involving a fictional third-party plugin ('Frobus'). And the example I gave - Dave Polich's topic - was also a third-party plugin.

I thought it was obvious I was referring to third-party plugins, but I've updated that post to specify that.
Things get pretty strange if we're going to make a distinction between included and third party plugins. The band pass eq topic for example would get a bit weird.

This is exactly why I suggested this a few weeks ago:

Mac Mini Server i7 2.66 GHs/16 GB RAM / OSX 10.14 / DP 9.52
Tascam DM-24, MOTU Track 16, all Spectrasonics' stuff,
Vienna Instruments SUPER PACKAGE, Waves Mercury, slaved iMac and Mac Minis running VEP 7, etc.

Confusion will be proportional to the square of the number of forums.

Like BoobK wrote, this is not quantum mechanics. It can't be that complicated.

Got a DP question or discovered something great? Post in the Digital Performer Usage, Techniques, Tips & Optimization forum

Don't like something about DP, or are having DP problems? Post in the Digital Performer Troubleshooting/Criticism forum

You have something to say about a VI or plugin or another app? Post in the MOTU Theoretical Discussions, Gripes, Petitions & Off Topic forum

If your question is related to some VI or plugin and its interaction with DP, post in the DP Usage forum, but if it's unrelated directly to DP, then post in the Off topic forum.

I really fail to see how that can be confusing...

+1, Fernando. My thoughts exactly.

If you're referring to this topic: http://www.motunation.com/forum/viewtop ... 26&t=55583, the OP's question is more of a 'general mixing' question, but since the replies focus mostly on DP plugins, the thread ends up being a DP Usage tip.

If instead it focused on third-party plugins (e.g., comparing them to each other, with little mention of DP), then it'd be off-topic.

I'm not saying that third-party plugins should never be mentioned in that forum. If someone asks 'how do I do _____ in DP?', and a third-party plugin does a better job, or does something DP doesn't, then no problem.

I'm with PhilO and James, though I don't disagree with what MLC and others are saying, I just want to avoid things getting so tight that new users feel threatened by coming here. You know the situation... you go on a forum and innocently post, only to find that you've broken some rule that you didn't think of, and everyone jumps on you. You start off a bad foot feeling defensive, and maybe even leave the community.

It's not uncommon, and it happens to the best of us. I'd air on the side of having a calmer, less dictatorial community, and let a few topics of questionable categorization fall through the cracks then risk driving people away.

Remember, we provide a service to MOTU by doing what we do. I firmly believe that DPs first and best asset is it's online community, and I've told people this before. It needs to be structured, yes, and I think it is enough as it is, but it also needs to be approachable, especially now that MOTU has a demo and people are trying out all the new aspects of the program, INCLUDING ITS COMMUNITY. All of us who have been here a while, we don't matter, we know the drill and have learned where to put our posts. But what we're talking about, here, is probably the most important and delicate groups: new and potential users.

All I ask to be considered is the person posting. If Monkey Man, PhilO, Dan Wurly, myself, or MLC accidentally posts in the wrong place, feel free to kick our ***es, but be a bit more easy on new users.

Unless some one is a troll, I think we should always be nice to them, this for the most part is a friendly place, and I for one like it that way. It is just the few posts that are completely in the wrong place that we should even say to the poster that they may get a better response if they put it in another topic forum.

I just went and had a look at the Usage, Techniques etc topics. I'd say about a third of them didn't appear to have anything to do with DP directly. Most of those were posted by experienced folks here and several topics are by people now commenting in this thread. Interesting - not sure if that's ironic or not.

If I want to post about a UAD's XYZ plug - should it go in Off-Topic or in General Recording? How about iLok issues? I've always thought General Recording is where that stuff should all be if it's not directly about DP but it is recording-related. Off-topic seems like it should be for true off-topics: "RIP So-and-So", "Here's a video of a 2-year-old playing a zither", "My Rant About Blank", "UK Kitchen Remodels" etc. And Mach3 posts (as an example) should go in the Mach3 forum, yes-no?

There are a large number of users that don't seem to get the difference between the tips and usage subforum and the troubleshooting forum. Doesn't seem that hard to sort out IMO although there might be a gray area occasionally - I'm talking about the complete disregard of using the appropriate one. A LOT of troubleshooting threads end up in the tips forum even by experienced users.

It would be nice to gently steer the ship in the right direction as opposed to creating more work for James. Then it would be a better and more organized place for all us, new and old-timers alike.

I've been a little busy so chiming in now. Personally, posts about 3rd party plugs I always felt we're fine in the DP Forum, since it's understood you're using them within DP. I could make a third party plug ins forum if that would be more useful.

LOL
Funny -all these years I've considered those posts off-topic. No big deal though.
