Yeah, that's been kicked around a lot, but I've never heard the clip you posted. Thanks. Good stuff!

We play that opening and it works perfectly (though if you're solo, you can play the F/G and it works fine). It made the rounds a while back.

What's missing is the piano.

Interesting.

This says different things from what Randy Bachman reported. His reproduction sounds pretty good. (If you didn't hear it, he claims he heard the original tracks at Abbey Road). E.g., the chord played on the rhythm guitar: was it Dsus4 or F+g?.

And a link on that page leads us to George Harrison's long lost solo in Here Comes the Sun. This is a wonderful little clip with George and Giles Martin, along with Harrison's son, as they play through the tracks and discover the lost solo.

Yeah. I tried to be careful by using the word "interesting" rather than to assert anything definitive. I had no reason to refute what Bachman discovered.

Truth is, there is a documentary out there somewhere in which George Martin talked about the chord he added on the piano which was tucked way back in the mix. It's subtle, but it really struck me as being central to the overall sonic authenticity... in addition to Bachman's discoveries, and not to the contrary. Martin actually played his part of the chord on piano in the documentary. It was very cool, to say the least.

I wish for the life of me that I could find that Martin clip somewhere. I've gone through bits and pieces of The Beatles Anthology and have yet to find it.

Now wait a minute, what kind of multi track recording was going on in 1964? Even if they were using a 4 track (which did exist, but I thought according to legend The Beatles werent using it until Sgt. Pepper....not sure) they were still making mono recordings back then, so the rhythm track would most likely have been recorded pre-mixed to one or two tracks (or maybe recorded on three and bounced down to one....oh wait, if memory serves, one could not bounce to adjacent tracks, so that wouldnt work...oh, oh, wait, you could bounce 1&2 to 4, and then 3&4 to 1...ah yes, the good old days. It's all coming back to me now...lol ;-)) and the remaining tracks used for overdubs.

So where are these splits coming from? Inquiring minds want to know.....

Gavin

P.S. Why dont we just ask Paul what that chord was?
