iZotope Iris -- new VI synth (sample based, w/ a catch)

Surprised I found out about this through GS vs. getting an email.
Takes a visual approach but is sample-based at its core.

Interesting.
The ability to use your own samples is key and the only reason I choose Alchemy versus Omnisphere. Altought Alchemy has extensive re-synthesis tools and a complex routing, Iris looks more straighfoward in its approach and maybe easier to use when in a hurry.
Will definitively download the demo.
Thanks for the tip.

Yeah, I was in a rush when I posted that, but am also curious how it stands up to Alchemy. I use Alchemy a lot more than I expected that I would; it's probably amongst my top ten VI's at this point. But I usually turn most of its internal effects off.

Re: iZotope Iris -- new VI synth (sample based, w/ a catch)
Just got the email this afternoon, and the website is now more fully fleshed out.
I downloaded and tried the demo, and am blown away -- this is a unique VI in many ways.
I love how you can essentially "step" through an evolving sound as it is visually displayed on the screen, and start where you want.
This is a sound designer's dream tool. In fact, I need it for some personal projects that I have been getting back to lately that are based on some soundscapes I did for a full-length film that never got funded. I repurposed the soundscapes along a "War Crimes of the 20th Century" theme, and have been looking to add more layers of frightening imagery to existing tracks.
I'm not sure that Iris would be as useful for musical projects, and it does seem that its target audience is sound designers for film.
Ever since my Nord Lead 3 was stolen, I have been less inclined to create my own soundscapes from scratch, but Iris seems finally the right tool for taking found sounds and shaping them any way I like. I was using the NL3 mostly for its limited FM capabilities anyway.
I will be buying this at the first opportunity (in other words, on Friday after my paycheque ). The wood and glass add-on libraries seem worth an extra $50 incentive discount as well.

It is pretty amazing. I snapped it up too along with the additional sound sets. Immediately reminded me a bit of MetaSynth just more accessible and with a more narrow focus.
Methinks they will do quite well with this VI...

I'm also wondering if this product is what came out of their recent purchase of a San Francisco based audio software company that was focusing on discovering musical content and musical matches.

Turns out that Dave Spiers of GForce (M-Tron Pro, etc.) was heavily involved in the conceptualization and development of iZotope Iris:

The sale is over Friday.

I jumped. It's awesome.
My only gripe is that it doesn't yet have the ability to link velocity to a filter (or else I just haven't found it yet, which is entirely possible...!)

After watching this vid I was thinking how I could use Iris .mhschmieder wrote:Turns out that Dave Spiers of GForce (M-Tron Pro, etc.) was heavily involved in the conceptualization and development of iZotope Iris:

I'd like to trying processing lead guitar bits and blending them on a separate track.
I just finished installing Iris, one thing I found strange is when I installed the libraries wood/glass they give you the option to install on a separate drive but if you chose a drive you get a message.
These libraries can only be installed on the drive running OS.
Installing audio and samples on my OS drive is not my preference but I guess I'll have to live with it.

Re: iZotope Iris -- new VI synth (sample based, w/ a catch)
It's been awhile by now, but I seem to recall being thrown by a couple of red herring messages as well, but then finding the samples were on my sample library drive after all. Unfortunately, I can't check from work.
I have a solid state drive as my main boot/OS drive, and it's hard managing that drive to keep the free disc space at over 10 GB. So it's a big problem for me too, when a program insists on installing large data sets on the OS drive.

I tried all my drives they got the same message and the continue button was disabled.
I'm hoping it gives the option when creating my own stuff.
Here's where the library is (Macintosh HD)/Library/Application Support/iZotope/Iris/Iris Library
I'll have to see if there's a way to move it and change the path.

Re: iZotope Iris -- new VI synth (sample based, w/ a catch)
I'll try to look at this tonight after rehearsal. I started looking at it last night but got sidetracked by the Orange Tree Samples update and the struggles I had with the new interface.
The one thing I did verify was that I performed the update from my main OS drive. I'll try to see where the samples were installed tonight, and also whether I have a log file from the installer.

Re: iZotope Iris -- new VI synth (sample based, w/ a catch)
I blew a session yesterday because once the guys heard this thing we were playing around with it for hours.
It didn't pass the DP plug inspection at first but after I repaired permissions it was fine.
Also it looks like its non destructive so along with the sample it saves a patch file, I think the patch and the sample have to be in the same directory.
I've read the manual but there's not much in there about the file structure.
