There was a white one of these (or very close) hanging in the centre of the guitar wall at a local store. I hesitated and was lost.

You got all the links right. It's my inability to disassociate Nashville from Gretsch.

Yep, the red one. Probably the most blingy guitar I have too. 8) Should I change my handle to TwelveStringGeek?

I have lots good to say about the build quality and feel of this guitar. Rather less to say about the electronics. It has a neck single coil and a bridge hum bucker with coil tap pull and a three position switch, single volume and single tone control. The guitar's tone has been described in some reviews as "boxy" and I kind of see where they are coming from. I'm interested in whether this gadget can add some presence and sparkle.

If the box doesn't get me what I want I may well put her up for trade for one of those fancy Rickenbuggers. But for less than $200 vs $3k for the trade up it has to be worth a shot.

Smart thinking.

No need to buy a Ricky, methinks. My story with getting a Ricky is a long and boring one. But, a little Jangle is likely to save you a lot of "jingle".

Wow, I go off-line for a few days, come back here, and it took me about 20 minutes of reading just to catch up to you guys!

Regarding the 12 string discussion, I have non-buyer's remorse for passing on a really nice looking Jerry Jones 12 string (JJ is now out of business, won't see any more of those!) late last year - ~$1,500. See it here, along with some other gems like sitar-guitar thingies.

Regarding the Radial, yes, I agree, you can't go wrong, AFAIK, anyway.

I have the JDV MKIII, and it is very solid, very good gear. Mind you, I am a bit of nut with what I do with it, so maybe you shouldn't listen to me.

I take my guitar into the JDV, and from there I break out the signal to 4 different amps/pre-amps. I take the outputs of those into separate channels on my Mackie 1640i. Then using the aux-sends on the Mackie, I pipe varying amounts of my amp/pre-amp signals into various pedals/efects via the aux-sends. I then take the outputs of my pedals/rack effects back into the Mackie via separate (or sometimes stereo) channels. What I end up with is a harmonically rich, complex tone, thundering through 16+ channels, and it keeps me up late, playing with variations. Just the other night I realized that my config lets me send delay lines into delay lines. I did not get any sleep that night.

I did a lot of research when I bought the Radial, nothing else really came close, and I couldn't be happier with the outcome.
Cheers,
BK

Check this out, special price (now over?) on a special-edition Eastwood 12 string.

That and I'll bet it sounds pretty fab on my Jerry Jones sitar too.

It's tax time and it turns out I'm getting a load back when I thought I had to pay a load. So I went to the "other" store in Vancouver and found a LH version of this:

http://www.zen-pharaohs.com/guitars/Gre ... /front.jpg

It says "used" but I couldn't find a scratch on it, or any wear of any sort. The action on this one was also very low, the lowest I think I've ever seen, perhaps a little too low. The price is about 60% of that quoted on the Gretsch site.

They also had the LH Pro Jet I saw a few days ago at the same price. It also had a part missing. (The store claims people take the Gretschs into the demo room and steal parts. They have a drawers of spares.) Same action -- set too low, unplayable on the first 5 frets except for very light picking.

And they had a LH White Falcon -- this one:
http://www.gretschguitars.com/products/ ... 2401421805
again discounted about 40% on the Gretsch site price.

What to do?

If you're serious about getting it, let them know that you'll jump on it (if that price is to your liking), but insist that you'll buy it ONLY if they would adjust the action. The guitar is serious enough that it might be worth $20 just to see if you really have a gem on your hands.

That's what I would do, anyway. Ain't nothin' like the real thing!! :P

I was looking for one about a year ago, and stuff happened. But no one ever died regretting they bought too many Gretschs, so I'll be back there tomorrow to discuss the action.

All I can say is this...

You are damn lucky that I am not a Lefty, because if I were, I would beat you to the store this morning and pick up that baby myself!

Well... I'd be thinking about it, anyway! :arrrr:

Looks like I'm destined to have this guitar. In other financial news, it seems my credit card was hacked in the most recent Global Payments fiasco. Until the new one arrives, I'm limited to $250 at a time. So it's a race between Canada Post and how fast Zed can learn to play left.

Sorry to hear about the credit card inconvenience. :-(

Absolutely have the music store hold it for you. Explain your situation and they will gladly take it off the shelf and put it in it's case and keep it aside until you are ready.

OMG, I would love to be bringing home the Righty version of that guitar right now!!

Welcome to the Gretsch club. :-)

I did hear/try one the other day that I actually didn't like, surprisingly. It was around $3400 and white with gold trimmings. But with Gretsch, there are so many PUP choices and I'm real particular about which ones (there are three that I like; the others are too dark and wooly for me). probably the first time I've tried a Gretsch over $500 that I didn't like. :-)

Sorry to hear about the credit card mess -- I hadn't heard about there being a worldwide hack. I wonder if it affects PayPal as well? Hope you work it out.
