Interesting article on this topic in the Guardian:
http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfre ... pple-stunt

One (beautifully written!) quote:
I’m actually less interested in this record precisely because it’s arrogantly and aggressively annexed my personal space. The Apple launch was a predictably imperious, pristine obelisk of grasping capitalism. On top of it now sits the Edge’s trademark delay pedal, reverberating a corporately subservient howl for all eternity.
Cheers,
BK

…string theory says that all subatomic particles of the universe are nothing but musical notes. A, B-flat, C-sharp, correspond to electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and what have you. Therefore, physics is nothing but the laws of harmony of these strings. Chemistry is nothing but the melodies we can play on these strings. The universe is a symphony of strings and the mind of God… it is cosmic music resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace.

...veering off course towards politics, but this is a satirical note that poignantly rings very true.

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see anything there as 'political'.

Opinionated, sure, but not political.

It sounds like a free album.

I don't like that it just got automatically added without asking. It's in my phone but not my Mac.

And worth exactly what I paid for it.

It's the best imitation U2 album I've heard in awhile. When bands devolve into self parody, it's sad. I'll listen to it again but, if I find nothing compelling, it's gone. Definitely not the second coming of The Joshua Tree.

No one has to download it. Really. It's not as easy to ignore as a coupon in the mail, I'll give it that.

I did not approve the download, it just appeared. That is kind of #%^&ed up IMO.

WOW! This album is really unpopular! I think the term "Spam Rock" needs to be added to the lexicon!

By the same mindset, I can hide every item in iTunes but I don't necessarily want to have it all appear (even for free) on my iPhone. I think it's really stupid.

My understanding is that it puts it in your "Purchased" items but it does not actually download it to your phone. I think the link I gave tells you how to keep it from appearing in purchased items?

Well that's kind of the same thing. They still seem to be forcing it on people w/o permission. I see this as a fairly devious practice. Whatever.

It doesn't push the actual digital files to your phone. That was my point.

I think Apple has ulterior motives. I don't know exactly what the strategy is, but a "gift" to it's customers is pure BS. I vaguely remember hearing that Steve Jobs felt music should be free. Hey Apple! Computers should all be free too! Wadaya think about that?
