exporting OMFs/AAFs

Post by Morpheo »

I just found out that DP can't export at 23.976 fps, it just changes to 24. Maybe it's not news but it is to me ;) Of course the time difference might be negligible but I'd like it to stay at my original frame rate thank you very much. I have to open the resulting OMF/AAF in Pro Tools, change the frame rate back to 23.976 and create a new one, which, in Pro Tools, stays at 23.976. Hopefully DP 9 will deal with these types of files better than previous versions - the only instance where I find DP unreliable is when I have to deal with OMFs or AAFs...

Apparently, DP 8 will export to 23.976 fps. Read this thread:

Thanks Mike but this thread you're mentioning seems to be referring to a TCBI issue, not OMF/AAF files per se. My project works and syncs just fine at 23.976 fps. But when it's time to export a sequence to OMF or AAF, DP automatically sets the frame rate to 24 fps (visible in the export window)... why? And there's no way to change it. It's like DP figures "oh it's close to 24, let's settle for 24 then" - that's absurd.

The large majority of the projects I'm working on are 23.976 these days. I have to deliver my OMFs at the correct frame rate to the mixer and I'd like to avoid that extra step in Pro Tools (opening the OMF, change the frame rate and re-exporting an OMF...)

Thanks for defining the problem better. I wish that I could help.

To clarify even more: when I mentioned the "export window" I actually meant the *IMPORT* window in Pro Tools. Here's what I see when I try to open an OMF made from a 23.876 fps project.

Sadly this hasn't been fixed in DP9. DP exports 23.976 sequences just fine to OMF, but Pro Tools still open them at 24.

My ongoing saga with OMFs/AAFs will never stop I guess. A few points:

- When importing OMFs, why does DP always change the project's frame rate to the OMF's? It makes absolutely no sense and could lead to problems. Example: you're working on a film at 23.98, but you need to import some material from an OMF that was 30fps. No worries, the import goes flawlessly, new chunk available, life is cool...with one tiny detail, DP just changed your project frame rate to 30 fps without any warning whatsoever. What it SHOULD do is open a dialog to warn you that the file has a different frame rate than your current project, and if you choose to import, then DP would certainly NOT change the project's fps. This is driving me nuts!!!

- And of course the issue mentioned before in this thread.

The thing is, in post-production every studio is running on Pro Tools - when you need to deliver your stems there's no other options in DP than exporting the final product to OMF or AAF. Dealing with these bugs is a big waste of time and energy. I love DP, but in that area it's a major, major pain in the butt.
