Generate 23.976 SMPTE from a Digital Time Piece?

Post by lehrman »

I have to give a film producer an audio file of SMPTE timecode generated at 23.976 fps, starting at 00:59:30:00 and running about 16 minutes.
Can I do that with my ancient Digital Timepiece? That breaks down to 2 questions:
1) How do I control it? It has no USB port, and when I hook it up through an MTP AV that has USB and RS-422, Clockworks doesn't see it.
2) How do I specify the rate? Can I use the pull-up or pull-down controls on the sample-rate section? Which was does it go (I would think down, but one never knows...)
I'm supposed to be an expert on this stuff, but this one's got me floored. Should I give up and get one of the new MIDI Express XTs?
Thanks,
Prof. Paul

i have a Digital Timepiece. I have only used it a couple times. But I hooked it up to the PCI
card on my old 324 card. I've never hooked it up to the 424 card, but if you have a PCI system I think you would hook it up to the ADAT sync port if the 424 card has one. I looked at my G5 424 card and it has what looks like an ADAT port. But I didn't crawl behind my Mac Pro to see what it has.

Thanks Rick. Unfortunately I don't have a PCI-based audio system. Everything in my current rig is USB or Firewire.

None of the older MOTU MIDI (non USB) devices support SMTPE 23.976. The standard is too new. Some of the USB units, likewise are too old such as the MTP AV USB. If the model's manual is in the Legacy section, it doesn't.

I think that all of the currently shipping MIDI models do. A quick check of the specs at MOTU web site will confirm this.

To my knowledge, the MTP AV is the only device where the USB and non-USB versions can be linked and both will work via USB. I could be wrong but I remember reading that years ago. Not that it matters since the MTP AV does not support 23.976 in either version.
