Definitely seems like a decision made because of business deals more than anything else. Especially since Guy was talking about how the upgrade to Cubase 9 still had film composers losing 50 hours compared to other DAWs. Whether or not it's more elegant in terms of using with Vienna Ensemble Pro, that's enough reason for most people not to switch. :-/

One of the biggest employers of "composer assistants" in town is Remote Control. Hans Zimmer's studio. He is all Cubase. If you work with them or want to work with them and the mass amount of composers based there, you need to be up to speed on Cubase. End of story. But that does not mean there are not a large amount of composers in town also using DP. I do see a lot of people leaving Logic and they are usually going to Cubase. Cubase has the momentum right now that is for sure. And the new Steinberg notation program Dorico (coded by the previous Sibelius team) and its integration with Cubase will only be making that stronger.

But rest assured, there are still quite a few "big name" people who use Digital Performer.

Michael Giacchino for one. His assistant is a DP guru as well. That's good enough for me. Last time we talked (about a year ago) I believe he said he was using DP 7.24.

As I enter my 43rd year in a row making a living as a composer, I realize more and more that "Independent minds" don't follow or even care about "trends." They do what is most expeditious to their art. And frankly, I prefer the role of composer without having to lean on a staff to do my work. I do my own orchestrations, writing, and conducting (most of the time). I also have complete artistic freedom to write what I damn please and don't have to answer to a committee or "supervisor" of any kind. It's rare I even have to let collaborators hear the music before a performance or recording. They just trust that I'll do the right thing.

So when I hear about Zimmer having a monster staff I am unimpressed. In fact, I feel for the poor bastards. THey're missing out on the best part of being a composer in the first place. It's not about the money, or the fame: it's about self-expression and they are not expressing themselves, they are expressing the ideas someone else has pushed on them. I can do that too, but I won't. I think that "system" in LA is stupid. Sure, I'd love an assistant, but I would HATE a "staff."

NOTHING beats artistic freedom when it comes to writing music and getting the proper credit and compensation for that work. I wouldn't change that for the world. Back to work...

What were we talking about?
