Getting DP video up on that nice HDTV

Post by c0mp0ser »

Hi all,

How are you doing this? Is anyone using the Blackmagic Intensity Pro?
http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Does it output any kind of video in DP? Or does it strictly have to be uncompressed (like with the canopus box)

Thanks!!

This card doesn't output video...it is strictly for software applications such as FCP and Premier. I know this because I bought one from B&H Photo, I received it and ended up calling BlackMagic Tech only to find out that it won't do what we need it to do. Just output video to a monitor.

He said that they had been getting a lot of complaints because it won't out put video (unless of course you're using FCP or Premier) but didn't know if they would rewrite the drivers so it would.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

I have this BlackMagic Intensity Pro card installed in my mac pro 2.8 / 8 core.
I can confirm this output option is not present in the DP 6.03 video sub-menu. :(

Currently i do not have an HDMI monitor connected .. that "might" have something to do with it but .. it seems like the BM PCIe card output would show up even if no monitor was connected.
( i have one but i just havn't had the time to disconnect it and move it )

As a work-around ..
Would it be possible to sync FCP and DP with time code ?
Then FCP can output to the HDMI monitor "in sync" with DP .

Page 987 of my manual says that it can sync with any "CoreMIDI compatible software"
Transmit Sync just shows:
AlphaTrack , Bassline , AIC driver ( AIC is in italics )
Not really sure what to try next .. ??? :(

Hope this sync thing will work somehow ..

It's just for HD editing in a video application for proofing.

So there is no solution yet to this issue? Any threat that might help? I have been going through all threats concerning video output, but couldn't really find an answer. I would love to have a card that leaves all the computer CPU for the audio work. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I use a DV Firewire output, it will also tackle the CPU from my computer, right?

I just received a 5GB movie file and it is quite frustrating to have this slow down my whole system.

Any pointers or help is very much appreciated.

Greetings,

C

I think you mean "thread" not "threat." :) Still, your English is MUCH better than my German! :D

Thanks for correcting that! Didn't mean to threat anyone! Quite the opposite! I am very happy this forum exists.

I have been living in New York for 5 years, but clearly my English is getting worse. ;)

Greetings from Berlin!

Why not just put another video card in the Mac and output to HDMI with an adapter?

Thanks Marcus,

I have been thinking about it, but would really like a full screen modus, without the timeline and the frame around it. I think it is nicer for the director and I also prefer to work that way. I met a sound designer yesterday who uses the Blackmagic card for Pro Tools and said it worked fine, so I got my hopes up that this might work in DP as well and checked on the forum.

What would be the official set up for this? HD Videocard from Motu?

DP can only currently output DV through FireWire..... I understand that MOTU are working to implement the possibility of outputting through their own video interfaces at some point in the future. There are now a couple of forums dedicated to MOTU interfaces at Creative Cow, and Magic Dave Roberts is the moderator.

http://forums.creativecow.net/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There is a program called VirtualVTR that can chase to incoming time code and output through various video cards, but it is rather an expensive option.

http://www.virtualvtr.com/vtrpro.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I am hoping that DP will include this feature soon..... I am in the process of preparing an entire concert's worth of visuals to be shown on a video wall. I am using DP's chunks for all the 25 (or so) QuickTimes, with DP chasing incoming timecode (from Ableton). It is a shame that it is only standard definition using this method.

Cheers

Thank you Stephen! This explains my search with no results.

I'm sure that this issue will soon be solved. It is just a matter of time that these things get easier and more affordable...meanwhile I will use a DV camera with Firewire output... ;)

Thanks everyone for their comments!

Best,

+1 - it would be nice to get other video formats out - that MOTU video box looks like a prime candidate for DP support you would have thought..

I'd buy one if I could get higher quality video than DV out of it..

Well, I'm just about to shell out £600 (GBP) for VirtualVTR which seems to be used quite a lot for the kind of job I am doing.... the next question is, will I be able to output my Quicktimes from a Mac Mini through the HDMI output, or am I going to have to get a new video interface for my MBP as well! Decisions, decisions.......

I shall keep you up to date on my progress.......

Cheers
