updating to high sierra fails saying drive error after load

The drive error card does not appear till the entire download is finished yet it claims the drive was not acceptable after all the loading is done. Tried it three times and when finished it locks out sierra totally. what up with this? The machine is an 09 upgraded to 12 core 5.1. I'm using two different ssd drives. one that says its compatible. Hours spent trying this.

Just a guess... do you have a Mac EFI graphics card? The HS install pushes a firmware update that must install prior to HS installation. You need something like a GT120 or ATI 5770 that provides a Mac boot screen for the HS EFI update to work.

The firmware update is for your Mac, not the GPU, and is pushed at the start of the upgrade to High Sierra. If your 5770 GPU is an official Mac version (provides a boot screen), it should work fine.

Not sure it is an original card. Bought used but it works and boots in El Cap. How do I tell?

I know HC is more of an expert than me, but I think one way you can tell is that if you reboot your Mac and hold down the "Option" key, if you then see the screen where icons representing the connected drives appear allowing you to choose which one to boot from, then you have the Mac specific card. It's my understanding that although the generic cards will work after the Mac is booted, it won't show you this screen. That is a reason I've always been skittish about using generic graphics cards, as I was afraid I might have some sort of trouble and *need* to see this screen so I could boot into a specific partition.

James is right. Timeline, is your 5770 the card you used when you upgraded your Mac's firmware from 4,1 to 5,1? If so, it is a Mac EFI card. If not, that may very well be your issue. Try the GT120 your Mac Pro came with if you've still got it.

General Note for Mac Pro Modders: If you ever update your GPU, always hang on to the old original, just in case! Although I'm running an AMD RX460 in the studio, ye ol' GT120 is standing by in the closet, ready for a quick swap if necessary.

HC no it wasn't. I used the original mac card when I did the first boot to 5.1 Not sure what happened to the old graphics card HC.

Thanks james for that tip, yes, the OS drive options appear.

Again, OS 10/12 claims when it finishes the upgrade that the drive is not worthy. :-)
Still baffled. As mentioned I have two SSDs and OS allows me to load to the crucial then fails.

Possibly HC you know of a 2TB SSD that IS definitely compatible?

They are:
