At first glance, this looks like a CPU failure.

I'd be cracking it open, cleaning everything and using Arctic Silver on the heat sinks. If you're lucky, there's dust somewhere interfering with the air flow or you find and replace a bad fan. If so, this fixes you up.

If unlucky, the damage has been done and that Mini is toast.

About the only thing you can do with one of these is swap in an SSD for the hard drive if you've not done so already. In addition to running much faster, it will run much cooler.

You have an unknown CPU error. The normal cause is excess heat. Although Macs are designed to run indefinitely, they will shut down if they get too warm. This needs to be cracked open and cleaned. Replace the CR2032 battery while you are in there. You need a putty knife to pry it apart. I don't remember when this changed but the vast majority open this way:

Let's hope it's not fried.

After reading on the web, that people with similar KP downgraded from 10.7.5 to 10.7.4 and reported that the KP disappeared...
I reinstalled 10.7 over 10.7.5 and let it run with high cpu usage ( and Macsfancontrol set to 65 deg c min and 80 deg c max ) to control the fan,
it got around 70 deg c, over night,
and it doesn't KP at the moment when shut down.
Also the shut down process is faster and 'feeling' different on screen.
I'm testing more and report back
Thanks

Tested more and it seems stable...
I rebooted into an 10.7.5 partition and tested there and got again KP
upon shutdown.
Rebooted into the 'fixed' 10.7 partition and all is fine again...
Should I update to 10.7.1, ?
Has anybody insights which version of 10.7.x is best for Audio ?
Thanks

I think 10.7.5 was the version where Gatekeeper was added, and IIRC, it was released after 10.8 to give the added security to older Macs. 10.7.4 was always OK for me, but 10.6.8 was better. I still run it on an old MINI and it can be left running without problems for months. Can you go back to 10.6.8?

Yes I could go back to 10.6.8 but would have to reinstall stuff...
I don't think I can instal 10.6 over 10.7, ?
I think I go with 10.7 for now,
or would you say 10.7.4 is more optimized for audio, or more stable ?
On my live rigs I have 10.7.5 on Mac Minis 2,1 ( up'ed 1,1 ) and
never a problem with shutting down, but there is no Melodyne 4 and no Mixbus on them running...just the X32-Edit v2.5 remote software mixer on a 15" touchscreen
Thanks

I can't say which of the 10.7 releases was best for audio. It's just usually better with OS X to go with the later rather than the earlier releases -- more bugs will have been addressed. In fact, Apple says they fixed some audio problems in 10.7.5

Thank you for the hint !
I'll probably go for 10.7.5 again, hoping my 10.7.5 that threw KPs was kaputt
Now I'm glad again to have minimal size boot partitions
( here for Lion 18 GB )
and doing block copies is fast
Best

Well 10.7.5 seems to work again after going back to 10.7 and up again to 10.7.5
Don't know what was kaputt but I hope it will not come back from my workflow...
Thanks

Your crash log indicated a hardware problem. My advice to open the case, clean and reseat the heat sink with Arctic Silver and change the CR2032 battery still stands. I would also reseat the RAM. Yours is the aluminum unibody so this takes patience and time. ifixit has instructions and any Mac tech can do this as well.

If you are still running mechanical hard drives and they are over 5 years old, there's no way that it/they are still good. A Mini is a little oven and heat kills components. Fortunately, replacing one of the hottest is easy and inexpensive.

I would hesitate to put an SSD into it unless the idea is to get something newer and move the drive when you do. Still, it's an easy upgrade and an SSD will run a lot cooler. There is an instructional video here:
https://everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_ ... -mini.html

The problem with a Mini 4.1 is that nearly anything newer is going to be better. There are plenty of great newer Macs out there that will run circles around the one you have that can be picked up used.

There is no version of Lion that is "best". Each had serious bugs, some of which were introduced with 10.5 and weren't resolved till 10.8.2 while others came and went. They affected what I was doing but may not affect you at all—our needs are not the same. OS 10.7.5 does allow you to run more RAM than 10.7.4 and earlier.

There is a lot of freeware/cheapware and even a few commercial apps that will crash in OS 10.8.2 and were sandboxed in Yosemite and later. Having been through that hell, I learned to read the crash reports and make those disappear. I see none of that in the one you posted.

Re: KP during shut down

Mike, thanks for your help,
this Mini is up and running again,
no problems again, like before the weekend, when it gave no KPs on shut down.
Reinstalling 10.7 solved the KPs on shut down, and going up to 10.7.5 did no harm either...
Remember that although it gave me KPs on shut down, it worked ok - if not shut down, or after a reboot .
If the cpu had serious problems, I don't think it would have helped to reinstall the OS, I suspect corrupted cache or swaps
I'm no expert, but think I was lucky...
BTW
Memtest and AHT didn't report errors ( twice ),
the battery was replaced and before, the ram replaced to 16GB, no dust nowhere insight ...
I can do everything I need to with it, and will clone it to an - the same - Mini 4,1 just in case the disk goes down ( I have separate clones of the partitions on it already )
BTW 2
Has anybody experience with DriveDx ?
( pre fail diagnostics.... )
Thanks again
and best regards
Klaus
