Factoring in the 5K display, it's $1,700 less than a current 8 core Mac Pro w/ the same 32G RAM and 1T flash from the Refurb Store. The point is taken, though, since I will want more than 1T available and 32G onboard. I'll certainly wait for the OWC and iFixit teardowns on the true costs of adding RAM and storage before/if I buy.

My concern is the amount of heat it will generate. If all that extra cooling capacity is really needed only for the 18 Core version, than I'm ok.

The most expensive Mac I ever bought was my Mac+ system. I paid $7k in 1986 dollars for that to run a business and it was worth every penny.

The fact that I want doesn't mean I will buy.

Now that I think of it, the least expensive Mac I ever bought was this 2010 iMac even when factoring in the $1,100 I spent on a pair of 2T of SSDs. It was about the $ame as the Performa 6200 I bought to replace the Plus and a lot less than the subsequent Beige G3 and G5.

In any case, the 2010 is the only Mac I have owned that still works great (better than new, actually) and runs the current OS 7+ years after I purchased it.

The base model comes in $400 less than expected.

RAM is upgradable after the fact but currently only at the Apple Store or other authorized service center. At time of order, 64G adds $720 while 128G adds $2,160 instead.

Upping to a 2TB flash storage is + $720. 4TB is available for + $2520. Ouch!

It will be interesting to see if OWC will offer upgrades and installation as they have done in the past. By having my 2010 shipped to them directly from Apple, I was able to avoid CA sales taxes and that nearly paid for the upgrade they did.

I'll wait for some time in the field before getting one of these beasties but still...

Mac rumor mill speaks of 1018 for a potential Dec release of the long awaited Mac PROS, or at least the announcement of the new Mac PROs. So what are all of your thoughts on waiting for a Mac PRO instead of iMac?

Not necessary for me. It will be designed for high performance video—even more so than the iMac Pro.

I cut my teeth in video during the mid ‘70s and would have killed for today’s technology back then—and yes, my friends and I did imagine many of the possibilities including hard drive storage even then. I chose a different path and can’t imagine working with cutting edge video again.

Except for indie projects where budget is more important than time, I seriously doubt that I will be hired for anything big anymore. Since my stroke, I’m too slow and it’s really that simple. Had it not happened, I’d be in the midst of the performing career that I had set up to begin in my mid-50s.

My focus going forward is audio with sync to AV from time to time. The current Mac Pro or the new iMac Pro is the machine I want. Spec’ing and pricing, the iMac Pro is less expensive. A really sweet deal on an 8 core or better Mac Pro might swing me to that direction instead—if the price on 5k monitors drops, that can make a difference, too. My 63 year old eyes need all the help they can get.

I still have time left in my day job. I’ll be taking a new role next month and don’t know if my computing needs will be greater or not. Currently, I log into over 100 web sites on 3 monitors every day—don’t know if that will increase or decrease.

Hmmmm... I should explain the hard drive comment. AMPEX was working on hard disk storage in the early 1970s and lost a ton of money when they couldn’t deliver on a military project at the million dollar per unit price point that was contracted. My father was on that development team.

For us, the possibilities of video without the limitations of video tape fueled quite a few after work conversations over coffee.

Anyone here bought this yet? Would love to here what DP can do with it. With reports that the next Macbook Pros might still be 16gb ram tops, I’m seriously thinking of digging deep & getting this iMac. Even at the base 1tb/32g, it’s still way faster than my current MBPro. And since I prefer to keep all my sam-le/project drive external anyway, I could probably live with upgrading the RAM only.

Some on the FB page have bought the iMac Pro and are really liking it. I'm in the process of writing some comparisons that I will post in a new thread later today.

Sample drive, sure.

There are good reasons for not keeping your project drive separate. Well, it was never a great idea but, with APFS, it's now even better to keep current projects on your boot drive.

Guess I missed a memo! What are the reasons Mike? I looked through that link, but I don't see anything about why it's a good idea to keep DP projects on the boot drive. Is it just because the new APFS tools can be applied, or is performance improved when you keep projects there? thx

What started as current iMac vs iMac Pro became much more comprehensive as I did my research. Since it encompasses the entire Mac line, I decided to put create a new thread.
