Since all of this, a buddy gave me a 12T version of this.

It was originally a 4T but he dropped a pair of 6T Reds into it for me. These set up as RAID 1 (mirrored) only so a 12T gives you only 5.89T of Time Machine. Let's hear it for Marketing! WD has tried to make these as easy to use as possible. I see that this can set this to JBOD—I may try that when I'm not busy to find out how easy that is from a Mac.

Resetting it to factory specs and updating the firmware, took only a few minutes if I don't count the time taken by the reset and firmware procedures. Time Machine is one of the default settings so after I named it and set Admin password, it was easy to find and it just works.

Were I buying, I'd have elected to do single drive units as I have no desire to use any of the NAS functionality. I can't turn down free, however. I did him a nice solid recently so we're good.
