MIDI Life Crisis wrote:And all that said, I do like my wired version of the Apple keyboard, a lot! Better than any keyboard I could find anywhere!

The iHome numeric keypad is a nice addition for my left hand as well (also wired). Very helpful in Finale when I want to enter notes on the piano keys with my right hand and designate note values with my left.

Even has a clear key... $20?? No brainer!

Nice!

No forward-delete key, though.

Yes, I know that it can be duplicated by using <Fn-Delete> but, on the standard keyboard, that takes two hands—impossible for me; inconvenient for others.

My wife saw me use it the other day. She had no idea what it did or how to use it. Besides being a writing and piano teacher, she edits books. That ought to be a good Get Out of Jail Free card for a couple of weeks at least.

Well, this is a welcome trend. Perhaps they'll provide a bay hatch in future models:

This one has it (for $37.75)…

Works great for me when I'm on my MBPro—I couldn't work without it (though once in a while, it forgets its' bluetooth pairing).

Re: Bluetooth- that's why I opted for a wired version. I won't use wireless kbds any longer for the same reason. The Magoc Trackpad has been more reliable that way but still will stutter every so often.

Same here on bluetooth. I got tired of endlessly repeating the convoluted and unreliable pairing process for my wireless keyboard and tossed it.

You have to get inside to repair it. The only news is that the 21.5" iMac no longer has soldered RAM. Some of the other info in that article is incorrect such as the availability of drive upgrades—besides Apple's offerings at time of purchase, you've always been able to do them once you get inside.

Who buys a new 21.5" iMac to run DP?

The only thing to be careful of with third-party extender numeric keyboards is that the numbers they transmit when a numeric keys is pressed are in fact the numeric key numbers as opposed to the numbers across the top of the QWERTY keyboard. The average user would never notice this, because the keypad will work for normal numeric input, spreadsheets, etc, but not be recognized as transport comments in DP.

I'm sure this one doesn't have this problem if you are using it already. I had that issue years ago with a Targus brand numeric keypad I believe. Perhaps most manufacturers have recognized this problem and been more careful with their products since.

James—you bring up an interesting point (as usual :!: ). I only run DP on my laptop when I'm traveling or on a show and need to do some audio editing. My 13" MacBook Pro is a month new (replaced my aging MacBook Air) and I hadn't had the occasion to boot DP on this machine… so I just did. The NewerTech bluetooth keypad works with DP in every way… except that the Enter key does not play a sequence.

It'll still be very helpful at those times I need to run DP on my MBP, but not quite the same as having an extended keyboard.

Hmmm.... I guess using spacebar isn't that big a compromise. Just glad that the numbers work, etc. Also, whatever the enter key on your numeric pad is mapped to, you can probably get it to work on your laptop by going into the commands window and assigning it as an additional key command for the "Play" button in the Transport group.

Good idea..... I'll try that and report back.

I hadn't used it with DP yet as I was doing a project in Finale but I just tried it and the iHome one (above) does work like the numeric keypad in DP.

Just a little FYI for those interested in the possibility. And it's darn inexpensive!

I was completely unable to read ANY of the product announcement info from Apple due to how they have redesigned their website for phones vs. desktop and gone ultra-black. my eyes can't handle low-contrast anymore. I have to depend on forum talk instead, when "challenged" by a website's visual presentation.

Good to hear that the "pro" tag-line on the top model iMac doesn't mean the actual Mac Pro line is going away. :-) I figure by next year, my Late 2010 model will no longer accept most updates. :-)
