iMac Pro announced at WWDC 2017

Post by James Steele »

Ugh. Maybe it's cool. Maybe it specs well, but the crusty old guy in me was hoping we were going to see some sort of tower form factor again. It seems Apple is hell bent on pushing all-in-one type designs on us.

Like I said... maybe mine is just a knee jerk visceral reaction, but I'm disappointed. They are definitely positioning this as the professional machine. I remember there was supposed to be a new "MacPro" coming. Maybe it still is and it's still a ways off?

I seem to recall a 2018 roll out for the new (white) Mac Pro but I also thought it would be at least announced today.

In the press confab a few weeks ago, they did specifically say there would be a new modular Mac Pro, but it was not going to be out this year. They also stated there would be new Apple branded displays coming out next year. I hope they clarify this because I personally am not interested in an iMac.

Ahhh... okay. I'm relieved. I thought that this was released in lieu of the new Mac Pro. It's going to be white?! Okay I guess. I just always loved the brushed aluminum cases. Which is fine, because my next Mac will be a 4,1 or 5,1 8-core converted to a 12-core. :)

Yes, Tim Cook said those things in a recent interview, too. 2018 sometime. I interpreted today's announcement as another regarding the new Apple 5K displays so they might be out later this year.

O'TOH, a new iMac Pro with 8–18 cores, expandable with two 5K monitors is exactly what my ideal machine could be. We'll see when it ships. I don't imagine I'll be buying this year so I'll see what's what then. I sure hope that I can afford it.

Fully loaded I'd bet that machine approaches or top $20k. Or you could buy 10 iMacs.

Apple is currently selling a compatible 27" 5K display for $1,295. Ok, it doesn't match but at least something is available.

Not likely. I bet that my needs will be met for under $10,000.

My Mac+ system cost me $7,700 in 1986. Adjusted for inflation via a couple of online calculators, that's now between $19–$20K.

I'm including two monitors and full ram and cores. For $10k that's doable.

This is right in line with the press conference in April:
Let’s not beat around the bush. I have great news to share:

Apple is currently hard at work on a “completely rethought” Mac Pro, with a modular design that can accommodate high-end CPUs and big honking hot-running GPUs, and which should make it easier for Apple to update with new components on a regular basis. They’re also working on Apple-branded pro displays to go with them.

These next-gen Mac Pros and pro displays “will not ship this year”. (I hope that means “next year”, but all Apple said was “not this year”.)

But more good news, too:

Apple has “great” new iMacs in the pipeline, slated for release “this year”, including configurations specifically targeted at large segments of the pro market.

My thoughts exactly. If the Official Apple 5K monitors are too pricy, those LGs, or something like them, should be affordable enough—perhaps come down in price the way that non-Apple monitors do over time.

I'll be 64 next year and will still be working. I expect that to be the last major MacPurchase I make. Not the last Apple product, mind you, just the last for heavy lifting in pursuit of making a living.

Clicked the link. The App Store now requires iOS 10. Guess I'm done d/l apps on my iPhone. Will be looking for an alternative to iPhone soon.

Just checked. I'm at iOS 10.2.1 so the error seems odd.

??? Is your phone too old or do you have a thing against iOS 10?

I'm using 10.2.1 on a 5s. So the error makes no sense.
