12.9" iPad Pro

Post by mikehalloran »

I'm typing this on my 12.9" iPad Pro.

Bought it so that I could make better use of the bass in GarageBand—13 frets on this as opposed to 8 on my old iPads. I expect that few will use that feature but, since my arm became crippled, this is huge for me (now if someone will only program a 5 string). I play live with a couple of bands and the GB basses are surprisingly good.

Damn! The on-screen keyboard is so much nicer with much additional functionality over the 9.7" version that I was spoiled within hours.

I also found a Logic Create keyboard/cover for it used, less than half price. Am glad I got it cheap. It's pretty good but I don't expect to use it much. The on-screen keyboard works for most purposes. I can understand why someone bought it, then resold on eBay. If I sell it, I won't replace it with another keyboard case.

I have an inexpensive leather smart cover coming—supposed to be genuine leather instead of PU (polyurethane). We'll see...

Those things are really lovely. They are the ultimate tablet, very possibly.

The Pro much faster than my iPad Air. Not sure how much of it is because of the CPU or the 802.11ac wi-fi support. For what I do, I suspect the later.

802.11ac requires a base station that supports the protocol. In my case, it's an Apple Time Capsule, the tower version. The AirPort Extreme tower supports it, too (but not the AirPort Express), as do a number of routers available nowadays. None are as easy to set up as the Apple, however.

802.11ac is rated at 40% faster than gigabyte ethernet. Not so certain about the 40% claim but I can verify that it is faster having tested it with 500GB file transfers. Although I have ethernet running to every room in the house, only the three pre-2012 iMacs are hooked up to it anymore.
