Disk Utility still sucks. I'm not talking about Repair Permissions which is easily done in Terminal.

DU has lost the ability to do simple reformat and erase so that I can use my back up HHDs. I no longer have privileges and trying to reset them gives me -30 and -50 errors before they change to Access Unavailable in Get Info. These are known good drives that pass SMART in TechTool Pro with perfect scores.

According to my son-in-law, "Oh yea, we broke it good, didn't we? It probably won't be fixed in 10.12 either"

I'm having to use DU in a Yosemite partition to get this done. Fortunately, that does restore these drives.

This sounds very troubling. Did this work okay on 11.5? I'm wondering if I should sit this one out?

Looks like Disk Utility on 10.11.5 is already the "lobotomized" version as I've seen some comments describe it. I guess it can't hurt to bump up to 10.11.6. I still have a Yosemite partition should I need to boot into that. Ugh. Ahh... I found the comment about Disk Utility that made me chuckle:
It's been lobotomized. Nearly useless, no longer on our team. It's on Apple's team..."you don't need access to hardware, no go download a puppy picture and update your Facebook status" !

Apple saw "Idiocracy" and thought it looked like a good idea.

No, it didn't. DU broke with El Cap. I can't tell if it actually got worse with 11.6 but I suspect it did. It certainly didn't get any better.

Holy moley! The buttons are still there, but are you saying they don't work? I haven't had need yet in El Capitan for DU, but this is bad. Really bad. :shake:

The buttons are there but they don't behave the same way—you can't write zeros on a drive anymore, only the volumes. Erasing doesn't always remove partitions and many other issues. I don't mind that but every HHD that I have tried to erase and reformat has become corrupted except for two. Both of those had SMART problems and I just wanted to write to zeros before recycling. So known defective drives are behaving while known good drives are not... yea...

I run the SMART test in TechTool Pro which gives me a graph on each parameter instead of Pass/Fail like Disk Utility. DU passes many drives that fail some parameters in TTP.

The issue is that none of my backup drives (Time Capsules excluded) allow me the proper privileges and permissions anymore. Normally you fix this in Get Info but that isn't working. I am getting weird errors. Erasing is failing in DU 10.11.x.

I created a small Yosemite boot partition and, when I boot from that, DU works as it should and these drives now behave properly. Of course, when I do that, I lose access to everything else so I can't perform these functions in the background.

Formatting new SSDs has been without incident in El Cap. YMMV.

Great information! I have been going through total technical nightmares these past few days, and was wondering if it was specific to my ISP (Wave/Astound), locality, or a general networking problem due to the RNC this week and all the major world events last week.

I have in particular almost been unable at all to get anything done from home when I remote to my Windows box from my MacPro. I thought maybe it was due to running the latest Yosemite updates on Sunday or Monday, but due to creeping issues the past few months, have started to feel orphaned.

So I did full backups last night, and plan to finally move to El Capitan tomorrow night (or tonight, if I get home early enough). I figure I am mid-project on so many albums simultaneously -- and all of them my own this time, so no waiting clients to worry about -- that I might as well do it now, before the next OS X version comes out and El Capitan becomes much harder to choose (though I downloaded the installers and made a boot drive).

Anyway, all of this news about networking fixes makes me feel safer in doing the upgrade, and more confident that it will fix my current situation, which has been degrading for months but especially the past two weeks. I just figure more effort is put into the current OS than the previous.

Oh, I just scrolled down further and saw the Disk Utility issues mentioned, which I am already experiencing on Yosemite of late. It's especially choking on my 5 TB drive that I desperately need to swap for a 6 TB drive within the next month (budget constraints at the moment, but mostly regrets over not knowing about the 4 July sale as for some reason I don't get OWC's notices).

If this can all be done from the command line, I'm find with that as Unix may not be my day-in-day-out as it used to be but is still something I'm comfortable with for the most part.

No issues on my non-studio Macs, but the studio will stay on ML for now. Just too solid to change. Waiting for DP9.1 to see how the promised efficiency enhancements pan out; it may then be time for a complete overhaul. We'll see.

Updates:

As of today, the App Store download is 10.11.6.

Regarding Disk Utility. It worked ok on a couple of newer HHDs with build dates after 1/1/2013 but turned a large stack of older mechanical drives to junk.

I was able to repair some of them in the Yosemite version of DU. The version in OS 10.4 could repair all the rest.

So there's an age issue and I am finding nothing online about it. Ok... I am now writing zeros onto all of the drives that failed and sending them to recycling at the next opportunity. Doing this on my G4 will take awhile but I can't have drives that become useless for no apparent reason.

Sounds like 10.11.6 is to be avoided at all costs.
