DP/ FCPX flying with this baby!
I've been looking for a 12-core solution for upgrading my 2008 3,1 8 core 2.8GHz without going for the Trashcan, which would require me to spend a ton of new peripherals (full compliment of PCI cards and hard drives) in my audio/video studio. After a few false starts- including a processor-upgraded 2009 misrepresented as an original 2010 by an obnoxious Craigslist seller feigning ignorance (revealed after a wasted all afternoon trip to San Jose- sorry guy, 3.06 processors were not being offered on 2009, and your claims of 1333GHz RAM turned out to be a flat out lie) and some upfront guys on eBay selling upgraded/ flashed 2009's, at least being honest about it but not offering any sort of warranty at all, I settled on a refurbished 2010 5,1 from IPowerResale:
2010 5,1
12-core 3.33GHz Westmere
24GB 1333 GHz RAM (and 2 slots still open)
GeForce GTX680 4GB VRAM
no hard drives- transferred all from my 2008- try that with a trashcan
90 day warranty, option to buy 3-year extension
entirely reasonable price
Worked properly immediately on installation (after dealing with a few third party license issues).
Just wanted to shout out to IPowerResale who were knowledgable and pleasant to deal with, offered good options after asking the right questions on both sides.

That's a very good price for such a fast machine Gary. One question: In the company literature, iPower state:
Regardless, you got yourself one fantastic Mac Pro that should serve you well for many years!
By "custom configuration", I assume they mean aftermarket CPU upgrade, as it is my understanding the 3.33 dual-hex CPU was not a stock Apple offering in either 2010 or 2012.3.33GHz 12 Core 'Westmere'
This model was offered as a custom configuration of the Mac Pro "Eight Core" 2.4 (2010/Westmere). However, this system has significant technical differences, and is documented as its own model, accordingly.

I'm guessing the same. I can't find it at everymac.comit is my understanding the 3.33 dual-hex CPU was not a stock Apple offering in either 2010 or 2012.
Anyway, Gary, looks like the correct upgrade for you.

Re: New(ish) MacPro in the house (studio, actually)
Yes, the machine is a custom build, took them about 3 days to get the processors in stock, build it, burn it in and ship it. Runs about the same temperature as my 3,1 (though the GPU definitely runs hotter).
I'll probably keep the 3,1 around for awhile as a backup.

Totally the right choice! I did the same to my 2010, and it's a total beast now. Congrats!
