Samsung 840 EVO Fix #2 Now Available

Post by HCMarkus »

Just stumbled across this re: State Data issue with Samsung 840 EVO SSDs:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/9196/sams ... 40-evo-fix
In the meantime this will continue to be an issue we keep an eye on. As with the initial problem and Samsung’s first fix, the decay issue only occurs after a time, so we’ll have to see where 840 EVO performance is in a couple months’ time. However with the very nature of the problem and the periodic refreshing of data, we’re hopeful that this will finally put an end to the performance degradation.
Appears Mac version is now available too:

I'm extremely confused. I burned the ISO image with Disk Utility, booted off it and it said no compatible devices found. I had an 840 Evo in a FW enclosure plugged in at the time. The Samsung download page says the Mac version only supports Advanced Performance Optimization in Magician 4.6, however Magician appears to be Windows only (v 4.6 .exe).

Update: The Googler tells me that these updates only work via SATA.

Yep. If you can't read S.M.A.R.T. Status in Disk Utility, you won't be able to run the update. It won't work via USB either.

If you have access to an Intel Mini, Mac Pro or an iMac with an eSATA port or MacBook with an eSATA card, you are good to go. Otherwise, a PC running the other tool is your best bet.

I'm not aware of any problems with my 840 EVOs. Would you guys I recommend that apply this update preemptively?

It fixes a specific problem and, according to Samsung, most users are not likely to experience it. OTOH, it is a firmware issue and they have released a fix – again! They recommend it.

Something to do when you can afford the down time (minor) and don't have a looming deadline.

It is not supposed to affect data but one should take the normal precautions: have a backup (or two or three) before you start.

As always, a flawless install. Maybe I'd never see it, but better safe than logy.

Just applied the update to the EVO 840 in my MacPro. It went without a hitch. :D
