16A Thunderbolt Issue

Post by jgmille »

Ok, just picked up a 16a. It didn't come packed with a thunderbolt cable so I ran it over USB flawlessly for 2 days while I waited for Amazon to deliver my thunderbolt cable. Have all the software installed, etc.. shut off 16a, swapped thunderbolt for usb and nothing happens. Everything in the routing grid still says USB from computer, etc.. Can't figure this out. Any suggestions would be appreciated.. Manual reads like it should just detect thunderbolt and work..
thanks again,

Jason

have been trying to figure this one out. the MOTU says it's in Mode: USB2 on the interface screen. Somehow it has no idea it's connected via thunderbolt. I have used my other thunderbolt ports on the 27" iMac for UAD satellite stuff, so I am really at a loss here. Anyone?

If I knew what a 16a was I might have an opinion.

Might be we don't have many TB users yet in this forum? Heck... I know I'll be on PCIe for some time to come. Mostly budget constraints driving that. And hey... if it still works, right? :)

Hmmm... the thicket plottens. This is the kind of thing that's seen me wait (6 months so far) for more certainty and info before I upgrade.

I'm super-keen on those new converters, but the upgrade path from the PCIe system seems fraught with gotchas, pitfalls, road blocks and worst of all, brick walls.

Jason, at least you're only running one unit; you should have next to no problems. Who knows, it could simply be a "display update" problem with the app. I wonder if repairing permissions, clearing the system cache or zapping the PRAM might allow the "readout" to update. :?

You probably did this, but you haven't said: close the app window and reopen. It sometimes stalls and doesn't follow. Try it with a different browser.

If you have Ethernet connection to 16A, disconnect it, that also causes conflicts for reasons barely touched on.

Try a different TB cable?

Have you tried shutting down the computer and the 16A, turning on the 16A first and restarting your Mac?

If it was eSATA (or SCSI back in the day) you would have to do so.

You can re-boot the 16A from within the control app. No need for full shutdown.

thanks for all the insight guys. I am going to try and give motu support a call this morning to see what they say. I am beginning to think its the cable. purchased from amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004CA ... UTF8&psc=1

I'm new to this whole thunderbolt thing myself and thought any old cable labeled thunderbolt would work fine. I'll update later today with what I find.

Also not clear; is USB still connected? If so, did you try it with USB disconnected?

ok everyone, issue resolved by buying genuine apple thunderbolt cable.

sheesh, Lesson learned: not all $10 thunderbolt cables from amazon are capable of pushing audio through, etc..

could have saved me 3 days of headache, called MOTU tech support and they suggested it may be a thunderbolt cable issue (they have had a few)..

overall, very happy now.

thanks for everyone's input.
