Question on Panther's audio input allocation

i have a G4 ,1.25, i5 G Ram. running 10.2.8. (very stable with DP 4.1) my interface is qa MOTU 828 MK 2 Firewire.

I would like to know this. panther apparently allows the Firewire Audio Console to specify any default I/O i wish for use by the Mac OSX apps. i particularly want Apple Soundtrack to record on my s/pdif outs from the 828 rather than from the mic 1/2's it presently only uses. (still don't knwo why it does that and nobody seems to know either)
has anyone had success with this in panther?
if so, i would make the move.
also, how stable is the latest version of panther now with DP?
