That's right. There was no disk with my MBP either, early 2011, although it came with SL. But IIRC there has always been a recovery partition on the hard drive, and I have been presented with the option to restore the OS via the app store from time to time during updates.

I started a new thread about my Yosemite install instead of further highjacking this thread.

Can you find Mavericks as a download in the App Store under purchases?
Lion, Mountain Lion and Yosemite are all there, but not Mavericks!

I checked on my MBP just in case, since it came with Mavericks installed but it's all one Apple ID so all the same stuff is listed in purchases on all my computers. I might as well install Yosemite I guess as I don't have much choice anyway.

Hi philbrown,

This might help, or at least it worked for me.

Apparently, even though I only downloaded Yosemite and never installed it, after download, it automatically hid Mavericks. You can get it back by following these steps:

Open the Mac App Store.
Choose Store > Sign In, then enter your Apple ID and password.
Choose Store > View My Account.
Click on View Hidden Purchases from the Account Information page.
From the Hidden Purchases page, locate the app you would like to unhide.
Click the Unhide button.

I have Mavericks back in my purchases. I downloaded it and made an USB boot drive.

Hope this helps,
Adriano

Now... why in the world does Apple choose to hide Mavericks but not Lion or Mountain Lion??

Hi philbrown!
Glad it worked

Corporate game?
Who would want to go back 2 or 3 version of the OS?
Just my thoughts
