Apple does not support Trim on any but Apple SSDs. That's OK. Trim is supposed to work on externals through TB. It will not work over USB.

Run Repair Disk occasionally–once a month is probably fine. You should see a line that your external has been trimmed. As I posted a couple of pages back:

Verifying and repairing partition map for “Samsung SSD 845DC EVO 960GB Media”
Checking prerequisites
Checking the partition list
Adjusting partition map to fit whole disk as required
Checking for an EFI system partition
Checking the EFI system partition’s size
Checking the EFI system partition’s file system
Checking all HFS data partition loader spaces
Checking booter partitions
Checking booter partition disk1s3
Checking file system
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Checking extents overflow file.
Checking catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking catalog hierarchy.
Checking extended attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
Trimming unused blocks.
The volume Recovery HD appears to be OK.
Volume repair complete.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Reviewing boot support loaders
Checking Core Storage Physical Volume partitions
Updating Windows boot.ini files as required
The partition map appears to be OK

This Akitio external case is a dual interface unit - has Thunderbolt and USB3. I'm using the Thunderbolt connection but don't get trim for the external drives when I run repair disk and system profile shows no trim support for the external drives. Perhaps the USB3 interface in the enclosure is interferring, even though I'm not connected to it ??
Lots of stuff and a recently acquired ability to stop buying

Yes, your original SSD. The similar OWC drive in installed in Feb has a three year warranty. Just curious how long yours lasted. I did read that many SSD's just go off into the night suddenly.

It was a gift from a friend of mine who bought it, and then decided up buy the larger one instead. I need to see if he has the paperwork. I may be out of luck there. 120GB is what it was which I found was really very small. Be cool if I could get it working again, but so much going on I just didn't have the time to fiddle with it. :(

Yep... many times. That's the problem. Disk Utility doesn't even see it. It is basically invisible to any utilities like that. It just isn't showing up at all.

I take it that it doesn't show up in the slot when you check in About this Mac. The only thing I can think of is to move it to another PCIe slot and see what happens... unless you've tried that already.

If this is one where the chip sets are removeable, try removing and resetting it/them in the card.

I'll give that a shot! Thanks Mike!
