Sill annoyed by Finder's column view...

Post by FMiguelez »

Is there a way to make the Finder in column view automatically "stretch" the columns to fit the longest file/folder names?

I don't like having to double click on the little || thingy below each window to see them in full, especially when navigating inside complex folders (Mavericks).

Thanks!

+1
I dunno the answer to that, sorry.

...and while we are at it, why does my Finder not re-open my windows anymore under 10.9.4? Every time I re-start, Finder opens without any windows. (Yes, I have the option ticked to re-open windows, and apps re-open as one would expect.)
Cheers,

Therefore, physics is nothing but the laws of harmony of these strings. Chemistry is nothing but the melodies we can play on these strings. The universe is a symphony of strings and the mind of God… it is cosmic music resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace.

There is a Finder command "Right Size All Columns Individually" you can see by right clicking on the bottom of the column separator. I recall you use Quickeys -- something assigned to that command might do what you need.

Thanks for that tip, Bays.

I'll check it out tomorrow to see if it's doable with QKs.

I can't believe Apple hasn't made that feature a simple preference, like the app MLC suggested above. Seems like a bit of an overlook, IMO.

XtraFinder is free and is the best tool/app I've found for this and other Finder tweaks. It has many other features, too, some of them are redundant now, but you can turn on/off whatever you need. It's not a Finder replacement, it adds additional functionality to the Finder.

"Auto adjust width of columns" is on by default.

It has an uninstaller if something goes wrong. FWIW, I've never had any trouble with it. It's been around for a couple of years and is well maintained.

Thanks Dan, this is a gem. Dual windows, coloured sidebar icons, auto-width. Perfect.

Glad you found useful, Bays.

One of the big things for me was to keep colored labels. I would be lost in my computer with just those little tag dots. I like tags but hate the dots.

It's funny, I didn't skim. I even went to the link you provided, but the description didn't sound like XtraFinder to me at all, so I didn't recognize it.

Sorry about that. I didn't really ignore what you contributed. And I'm old, I get a pass. :?
