Norton disk doctor disk error

Post by grunter »

I'm having hard disk problems on a 200gb Acomdata firewire drive. I am using Norton Utilities Disk Doctor 8.02 on a dual G4 1.25 Mac OS 10.2.8. When I intially start up the computer and run disk doctor on this disk, no problems are reported; however, after an hour or so, when disk doctor is run, it stops during the catalog structure test & reports a disk error. Any ideas what might be going on? Should I try running another disk repair/optimizer program? Is my drive ungoing a slow death?

Norton and OS X don't mix. You're better off just using Disk Utility and something like OnyX, or Macaroni, or MacJanitor. OnyX is free; the other two don't cost much. If you want something more get TechTool (like inukshuk mentioned) and/or DiskWarrior. Norton is not an option (IMO). They don't even support Mac any more.

I agree with the information above.

Trash your Norton System Works.

It gives a lot of false readings.

Purchase DiskWarrior and TechToolPro.

DiskWarrior can rebuild the directory and TechToolPro can rebuild the directory as well as defrag/organize. Those two programmes have saved the day for me when OS X goes wonkey.

Also purchase the shareware Cocktail.

Norton works fine for me on OSX 10.3.7 - not sure why people say it doesn't mix with OSX.

It may work fine for you now, but you're playing
with fire.
I wouldn't trust (a now) unsupported product
on OSX.
Diskwarrior for optimizing your disk directory
and techtool for optimizing files

My day job is IT in a marketing firm where we have lots of Macs and they all run all kinds of creative apps - we generally distrust Norton on the Mac because it tends to give false readings and sometimes makes a situation worse. Though we have licensing for it, we never use it. We've been bitten by its problems too many times.

DiskWarrior, Drive 10 & Tech Tool Pro are our tools of choice. If I had to choose just one - I'd probably choose Tech Tool Pro.

Just my $0.02

Do a Google search and you'll find literally thousands of posts and links discussing the dangers of running Norton on OS X. I don't know if you make a living working with audio on your Mac but if you do, you'd better have backups of everything to safeguard your livelihood.
