Is the physical Toslink plug that works with a G5 the same cable used for ADAT i/0? I know the G5's output is only 2 channel, but can I use it as an output to a 2408? Do the digital protocols work together?

Adat and SPDIF both use the toslink system as far as I know. On my 828 it can be either spdif 2 channel or adat depending on the configuration of the firewire settings.
So you should be able to use the same optical cable.
