How about Not every old thing on your Mac is compatible with Mavericks.

Except for Gmail and Mavericks 10.9.0, I can't think of a single thing that worked in 10.8.2 64bit but wasn't Mavericks compatible.

Those who went directly from 10.6.8 to 10.9 because it is free would certainly think that Mavericks is the issue. They didn't go through the upgrade pain that was 10.7 - 10.8.2.

Except for the crash hell and Trackpad issues I went through with Spin Dr and Bresink, I really liked 10.8.2 because it finally fixed all of the printing and scanning issues that hadn't worked right since 10.4. They were first broken in 10.5, made worse in 10.6, got really screwed up in various builds of 10.7 and stopped working completely in 10.8.1. Plus, it made Bonjour compatible with wireless scan and printing.

Quote from actual support call from tech logged into my system remotely - the scanning issue in OS 10.8.1: "All you have to do is ... oh ... I see ... you really can't save a scan... no, we no longer support the old way so that won't ... Yes, it isn't there on my screen either. Let me do this on my system ... nope, that button isn't even greyed out, just missing completely ... No, it's supposed to be there... You are the first person complaining that I know of... No, I can duplicate it ... yea, it needs to go to Engineering right away..."

Mike, it's interesting what you said about printing and scanning. I never had any problems with printing with any OS versions I can recall. Scanning stopped working for me on a Mini in 10.5 and came back in 10.6.8, and I still use the Mini on 10.6.8 for scanning. On other Macs, scanning died in 10.7 and came back in 10.8.

I had Apple trackpad issues on an iMac (described at length by Shooshie) with 10.8, and these didn't clear up in 10.8.2, and I still have them with 10.8.5. On a MBP with Mavericks, I see similar trackpad issues, but only with DP.

With Mavericks on the MBP, the system often seems to ignore clicks on the red window close button. I have to change focus to another window, come back to the original window, and then the close button will work. Other window buttons and fields work fine at the same time. No such issues on a test Mavericks partition on the iMac.

With 10.9.0 to 10.9.2 my MBP was not very stable, and had to be restarted every day or two. With 10.9.3, stability has returned to the levels I had with 10.6.8

The point is not to dwell on these specific issues, but to note that the problems seem to be so specific to particular Macs, and they appear so different from what others see.

The scanning problems started with OS 10.5. With 10.6, TWAIN driver support was dropped and a new procedure was adopted using Image Capture.

Certain scanning features that I use in my day job broke with OS 10.7 but there were workarounds. With 10.7.3 and 10.8.1, they died completely. I had AppleCare blaming HP and vise versa. With 10.8.1, I was escalated to Engineering who confirmed that anyone doing what I was doing couldn't and that it was the OS, not the HP drivers, that was at fault. They only looked at my iMac once, confirmed I was doing it right and that the Save function I needed no longer existed. Fixing scanning once and for all became a priority and I became a beta tester for 10.8.2 which came out fairly quickly. In the mean time, I was scanning faxes with my smart phone.

When 10.8.2 was released, not only did everything work as it should, I could scan with SmartScoreX - something their support team had given up on when 10.6 dropped support for TWAIN drivers. And wireless scanning worked, too. My daughter has a dual boot system as the Danish version of Rosetta Stone doesn't work 10.7 on. I am able to to compare the functionality - wireless scanning with my HP only works in 10.8.2 on.

And my point is that I don't believe that. If I looked at your system while it Is acting up, I could find the cause.

You believe that it is an agree to disagree issue, perhaps. I'm certain that it is an undiagnosed problem.

I take care of over 30 Macs at any one time. None of them are having these issues in Mavericks - well those that can run Mavericks, that is.
