DP Performance with Dual G5?

Post by zeronyne »

Welcome back, everyone.

So what's the max track count/plug in count with a Dual G5? Anyone do a little stress testing yet? Purely out of curiousity...I'm not ut to boast or compare.

How are the rest of you configuring your drives for max track count?

The G5 has internal space for only two drives and to get max track count you'll want to spread the load. Firewire has some write limitations and at least one internal will most likely be running Sys+Apps.

So where are you placing samples, recorded tracks, etc?

I wonder what his internal temperatures are? My G5 2.5G hit 187 F degrees in the Memory Controller which is right next to where you "could" install additional drives.

After doing some research, it turns out the G5 2.5G uses the IBM 970FX processor which is rated up to 105 C degrees (221 F degrees) so these can get pretty hot!

I think a better choice than stuffing the oven with extra drives (there's a reason Apple doesn't offer this option) would be to use external SATAs such as offered by ProMax.

Well, here's a guy that crammed in 10 drives:

Its like stuffing a VW bug with drunke frat students. You "could" but why?

btw, the FW800s are pretty quick. Almost as fast is the internal SATAs. However, when adding more than one, I don't know at what point you'd hit a bottle-neck with the single FW800 bus. There should be plenty of bandwidth but I don't know how well it works in practice. Anyone?

Synergy. It's the same guy.

Email him he will be glad to respond to any Q's you have. I emailed him and he told me in detail what kind of ISO he did to keep them from bounsing around in there.

Hello guys,
I'm about to buy a new g5 dual system and want to crossgrade from Logic to Dperformer so it's nice to be at this forum.
I was also wondering some things like what the average track count would be with a dual 2.5Ghz G5 and which h.disk would be used then?
I mean 24 bit 192 khz tracks and how many plug-ins running, which plug-ins etc.?
-Did anyone test the 10.000 rpm Western digital SATA drive, I think it's noisy but darn fast.
Would a fw800 drive be a better choice than a sata?
*What I think the best would be an external 15.000 rpm 75 GB drive connected with ultra scsi 320 for audiotracks and an internal Sata or firewire drive for plug-in libraries like Ultrafocus, Spectrasonics etc. and ofcourse a lotta ram.
I have been using large Protools HD mixplus set ups with 10.000 rpm external drives which give you a lot of track counts.
Forgive me for writing such a long message.

You will get much better performance with Logic than you will with DP. Hands down.

I use the RAPTOR WD and I have had NO problem cranking out 40 tracks with about 12 VI's and 3 instances of Altiverb...
I return the VI's to audio tracks and the G5 records ALL of the VI's AS it's playing them with no problem @ all.... @ the same time running EQ and dynamics ON EACH CHANNEL...
BUT I have 7 gigs of ram and that really made a HUGE difference!!!!
