new dual G5, suggestions, please

Post by GMT »

I'm planning to purchase a new G5 dual 1.8. I plan to run DP4, also considering Mach5. I'll need to upgrade my current 2408mkII PCI.

I'l probably add another internal drive.

How much RAM should I plan to add?

Any other issues I should be aware of?

Thanks to both - I've budgeted for the extra ram - 2G.

I've been planning also for a 2nd drive to store music files only. Internal or external/firewire? Advantages/disadvantages? Portability, noise level, access time... time to do some reading.

I usa a second internal SATA drive for audio on my 2x1.8, and external fw drives for backup and for taking projects/files to other studios. No probs with the internal SATA (Hitachi)so far.

Sonnet Tech makes a SATA to ATA converter for about 60 bucks if you want to continue with an older drive on your new machines.

I bought one and it works great!

I've decided to go w/ SATA internal, and FW external for portability, b/u...

The ultra-wide SCSI drive (pci) won't run with the new system - ppl OWC (aka macsales.com) said it would be costly to use it (conversion/adaptor) with the new box. Hence, FW drive.

Time to get all my software upgrades in order.
