DP8 prefs and plugs on Windows

Post by profdraper »

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, but couldn't find this:

Could anyone advise where DP8(.04) stores its preference files in Windows? Also, how to force re-build a plug-in scan. Just want to do a simple trash prefs and start again ...

Overall I've found VST plugins, their locations and examination by DAWs to be quite messy on Win (vs. OS X). In the case of DP, this often results in very long scan times and/or the failure of many solid plugs that other apps recognize without fail (eg, UAD).

Thanks.

I'm not sure where the pref file is stored.

If you have plugin's that are not loading (but are in your VST folder you listed in DP8) then you can check their status. DP analyzes each plugin, so if it failed, it will tell you.

1: Edit > Preferences > General > Audio Plugins
2: In the window of effects, scroll down until you see the plugin in question, and check the status.
3: If any of them have failed, - highlight it and choose "reexamine". It will do an analysis and tell you what might be wrong, or - it may pass this time. (restart is required once an examination passes).

Also keep in mind that the 64 bit version of DP will not load any 32 plugins and vice versa.

Another option, although tedious - is to remove your "additional VST Folders", do a restart, add the folder(s) again, restart again. That should reload your external plugins.

Thanks, yes. Generally odd behaviour in DP8.

VST64 plugin dir is the same for all audio apps (Programs/Steinberg/VST). Except that DP finds them (or at least shows them on the plugin list) irrespective of any setting for 'additional plugin folder' - in this case then, for now, with no entry at all.

DP doesn't not clear the VST plug-in list via re-start, re-boot or most recently a complete uninstall & re-install. Instead, it shows a list of 'examined' plugins - for example, the complete list of UAD plugs, but around half of these as 'passed', the other half as 'failed'.

But then it turns out that the 'failed' plugs can actually load, etc ....

Buggy. Would be useful to know how to 'zero' the thing by killing all its preferences, just like I would normally do in OS X.

Thanks.

Found it. A hidden folder in the user dir called 'AppData' (like the Mac user/Library, you can set this as visible via the Control Panel 'Folder Options'). There's a MOTU folder and deleting this from time to time cleans up a host of (too) common errors - like losing the ASIO drivers & not being able to be re-set; like the plug-in scan & cache becoming corrupted etc.
