Transfering printed scores in DP7

Hello,
Quick question.
I have a printed orchestral score ( from Finale) and I was wondering if you can import it in DP 7.
If yes, how do you sync the score tracks with DP tracks?

I mean do you have to create the MIDI tracka first? Is it even possible? I am asking because if it is possible I will save a consideraate anount of time rather than importing or playing every single note to import it in DP.

Export a standard MIDI file from Finale and open it in DP. Assign playback instruments. Depending on the complexity, meter changes, etc., YMMV.

If you have access to the Finale document that created it, then it's an exportMIDI/import MIDI issue. You can even download the current demo, open the file and export MIDI for 30 days.


If the score exists in printed form only, then no—or rather not without spending some money. If that's your situation, post and I'll list a few of your choices.

I find this odd being in the Windows group since DP 7 and earlier are Mac only.

Actually I made a mistake and posted under Windows but I own a Mac Pro.

Unfortunately I do not have the finale document, only printed scores (in pdf format). I thought in Finale you can scan documents but I am not sure. Is that right?

Depends on your Finale version. F2014.5 or earlier does OCR but on an orchestral score the might be more trouble than entering the notes.

...you can’t just scan in Finale 25, the only available version for the Mac.

I don’t know of any scan-to-MIDI app except SmartScore X2 Pro and it’s a major PIA for that conversion. You need a notation app to convert the scan (.enf, .tiff, .xml) to MIDI after you edit the notation so it makes sense. Depending on the app, plan on a lot of work.

There are apps that scan to MusicXML, others that scan to .enf for import to Finale and one that exports to Sibelius.

Finale 2014.5 back to 2002(?) has the ability to scan notes using SmartScore Lite. Sibelius has its own “lite” app.

The least expensive solution I know is Music-To-XML at $99. You still need a notation application to convert it to MIDI although Logic Pro X may work—I’ve never tested its MusicXML import/MIDI Export capabilities.

Since the music industry/ technology is light years behind I will wait until 2250 and then will try again transfer the notes from score to DP.
Hopefully by then the Finale geniuses- developers will include this feature in any version , any OS, and without issues...

Do you really think music tech is "behind"? Doing what we're capable of doing now was only a wet dream less than a generation ago...

If they haven't figured out how to perfectly "interpret and MIDI-translate" a .pdf score it's not due to lack of technology, but lack of resources, interest, R&D, and even market considerations. Throw enough money their way, and I trust they'd have it ready in under one year.

Depending on how intense the score is, and how competent your keyboard skills are, you could play the part in one track at a time- and it would take as many passes as you have parts.

Let's hypothetically say that would take 3 hours.

You could also mess with a program that would scan the staves as MIDI getting most of it wrong and requiring lots of cleaning up. Let's hypothetically say that process will take 400 hours.

I use SmartScore X2 Pro. It runs 80–90% accurate on the rare occasions I fire it up. I hope that there's an update to 64 bit this year but it won't bother me much if it doesn't happen. Back when I was doing a lot of church arranging, I found it a time saver.

As to DP, I am hoping to see MusicXML Import in DP 10 whenever that happens. As someone who composes in notation and never DP, that will be huge for me. MIDI is ok but...
