At first, I was thinking this was some kind of hammer, anvil and maybe a carving tool.

Looks like this could be done with regular old neodymium magnets. It is nice that they can be slid around. Keep away from your credit cards and electronics!

Ooh, and I just realized that certain mic types might not work on "tuned" cymbals due to proximity to the magnets!

I could see that being a potential issue with hi-hats where you might get closer, but that would be easily managed.

It's a little misleading to call it "tuning". It's just damping.

Yeah, you're right, but some people consider tuning and damping to be the same thing, as it affects the harmonics.
