Torn tweeter

Post by westla »

My studio monitors died, and a friend had a pair of monitors sitting in his closet that he wasn't using. I thought great! Well, when he got them out, his cats had scratched the tweeter domes, so both tweeters have tears in the domes.

I'm guessing this means that the monitors are unusable. Any idea what the repair cost would be to fix the tweeter domes? Is it worth it?

Thanks

A little paper and glue should do the trick and I'll bet they sound as good as new.

I would use Elmer's and a piece of paper towel or coffee filter as a patch. Keep it as thin as possible. Some people have used nail polish or super glue. It won't look great, but should do the trick. You could even paint over it if you wish. Some ideas here:

I'm sure others have their favorite home remedies.

You don't mention what kind of monitors they are... It would make a difference in deciding whether they were worth repairing. If they are, and it were me, I'd pull the drivers, find a part number and start shopping online for replacements.

Sorry thought I mentioned it. They are Event 20/20bas.

Some large companies like JBL make their own drivers. Nearly everyone else uses stock components. The trick is finding out what they are so that you can get the ones your system was designed around.

Call the maker. I've found that if the manufacturer no longer carries replacements, they'll tell me what was used.

A quick Google search shows that these guys carry them for $80 each but are currently back ordered.

There's a phone# you can call at this link:

Chances are good that one of these is right. Since your Events have a trim pot, dropping the right one in should be easy. Yours should have a nominal 8Ohm impedance.

Definitely worth fixing at that price. I love my Events (I replaced a pair of the last gen 20/20bas with the V.3s).

I did a little research and it seems that the original units are no longer available.

I wouldn't worry about it, however. Since they have a 2300Hz crossover and a trim pot, you can certainly find a replacement that will do the job. You will notice that nearly all aftermarket units are tested at a 2500Hz crossover.

If you can find the input sensitivity spec for the original tweeters, finding a suitable replacement will be easy.
