Roland D 70....what is this part called?

Post by wonder »

My lower half of my Roland D 70 isn’t giving me sound.

I’m suspecting this part (picture attached).

Do you know anyone who carries this part? Or can you tell me what this is called?

Ribbon connector. Who here do you think would "carry" that part; or has James opened a "parts" forum? LOL

Another brilliant post. You're adding to your post count quite nicely.

Actually, sir, its called a full-custom flexible circuit. Its not a ribbon cable, per se.

I was looking for a part number.

Before you post and try to insult someone, you might want to do your homework first.

Cheer up, man.

I only go by what you write. That's what you wrote. We don't have telepathic powers on the forum yet.

I am so done with you. BLOCKED... AGAIN!

I win.

Anyone else had experience with a Roland D 70 and this part going bad?

Errr......I don't want to upset anyone but have you tried Roland? Or a Roland forum?
Otherwise look for a D70 on ebay and you may find someone with parts or an old one.

I have a Roland U20 which I loved, and a Korg Wavestation but I gave up sometime ago using them and my U110, Linn Drum, and TX81Z modules due to wear and tear issues much like this (replacing the battery on the U20 was hard work). So I sampled all of the most used sounds (including the Rom cards)and made Reason Refills out of them, having switched to an M-Audio MIDI controller keyboard. I would find it hard to believe you could not find the equivalent Roland sounds out there somewhere (the Wavestation was solved by getting the legacy software version). I think Reason refills exist out there with Roland sounds. This may not be the solution you are looking for but I can't recommend the NN-XT sampler in Reason enough. Hell, get a cheap version of Reason for this alone. I have all my samples (some crudely re-recorded by me but I like them) and my favourite patches. Can't see the need for the old hardware anymore nice as it was.

Funnily enough my DX7 still fires up fine and works no problem - they built them to last....

It's a connector. That's all it does. From the photo it doesn't appear to be damaged. Why do you suspect it? If the contacts are damaged, it's suspect, but it doesn't look like they are. If the contacts are dirty, I've had great luck with Caig products for cleaning connectors:
http://www.caig.com/

If dirt is the problem, you'll have to clean the female parts of the connection even if you replace the flexible (male) connector, so I'd start with cleaning then take it from there.

Careful Phil. This guys a little "testy." He has the name of the part but edited out that of his nasty reply to me. I told him it was a ribbon connector, but apparently that's not good enough. No Wonder....

Burnish the connectors. Remove and reinstall three times. If that works, buy some DeOxIt and do it one more time. If it doesn't, probably isn't the problem.

I have to agree with MLC on this it took me about 1 minute to find this page on Roland's website.
http://www.rolandus.com/support/parts_order_request/
I wouldn't come here to Motunation looking for the part # or name of the part I'd contact Roland directly.
In my experience Roland support via phone is very good,if I'm looking to fix or for a name of a part for a Roland product I'd start with going to Roland's website or calling support in L.A .
There are also numerous authorized repair shops for Roland products all over the USA,I need to replace a backlight on my vDrum/TD-20 and there are 2 shops here in NYC that Roland recommends.

I'm going to veer slightly OT.

Finding parts for Roland, Tascam, Yamaha and Sony is pretty easy these days via phone, fax and internet.

Fostex, otoh... Anyone know where I can send a Fostex multitrack cassette for a new pinch roller?

Pinch rollers are getting harder and harder to find. New is really tough. You might find something used from a place like this:
http://www.angelfire.com/electronic2/vintagetx/

There are also chemicals available for "rejuvenating" rollers. I can't recommend, never having used the stuff myself.

Unfortunately, tape machine parts are going the way of typewriter parts. :(
