Not sure if this should go into Theoretical or General Recording.

Anyway, this is a pretty good article, especially for those fairly new to the process or intimidated by the idea of applying equalization 'in the dark' as it were.

It is also applicable to live sound subject to the components of the PA system and room variables such as temperature, humidity and crowd density.
