Tascam UH-700

Post by bayswater »

Does anyone have one of these, or an opinion on it?

I rarely need more than 2 in 2 out any more, and I'm not that happy with the AD on my 828, although the DA seems OK. I really like the sound of the Tascam equipment I used many years ago, but who knows if there is any similarity between then and now?

The reviews I can find are all good. Any reluctance is from a sense that Tascam doesn't support their products for very long with new drivers etc, and isn't particularly Mac oriented.

Now that Gibson owns TASCAM? Say it isn't so!

The question is if the UH7000 requires drivers to interface with the Mac or only to use the proprietary software. Many of their products are class compliant but this is one of them. Interestingly, they say that they no longer include drivers on CD since you should always download the latest from their web site. Anyway, they released a firmware update for Mac users last April and Yosemite drivers last June -- good signs, I think.

Full Compass, B&H and Musicians Friend are advertising a "price drop" to $399. This usually means something new at NAMM this week.

I didn't know that. I was talking about their past practise. But Gibson puts me off. I guess the 29% price increase didn't apply to Tascam.

Good point. If the box is class compliant, it won't matter if they update drivers. I'm not that concerned about the internal effects.

Thanks.

Yes, I saw that they've provided a 10.10 update. I'm more concerned about 10.11, 12, etc. It's alarming how quickly these things go out of date. I want to be able to use this 10 years from now with whatever version of DP we're at, and whatever version of OS X I need to run DP and Logic.

I've left a question on the Tascam support line on whether it's class compliant.

Gibson purchased 1/3 of TEAC in March, 2013.

Yes, you need the drivers even for the converter. That takes this off my list. I've been disappointed before with Tascam's record in updating drivers. I'm having a look at the new Arturia interface.

What would be really helpful -- if MOTU came out with an interface in the new series with a lower channel count at a lower price.
